Anything better than quick heats out there? When they work they heat fast and I like them...however for me they have proven to be "Quick fails" more than anything. I had been having some issues with my pick-up (83 C1500) that i felt were fuel line related, so today I replaced the line I felt was the issue, bled the fuel system and could not get it to start. :doah:

It's 58F outside, and no go. For giggles I grab my test light and start testing GP's. Passenger side, #2 = dead, #4 = dead, #6 = dead...confirm test light works...yup. Can't reach #8. Drivers side, #1 = good, #3 = dead, #5 = dead, #7 = dead.

At best I have two GP's that work, which explains the no start issue. I dig through my drawer and find my baggie of spare GP's (also quick heats) and find 5 that work. Swap them in and lo and behold we have ignition.

So, I like the way the quick heats work with the stock glow controller, but I don't like the lack of longevity. Is there anything else out there that is self limiting, glows fast and actually lasts a few years? If not I guess I'll just suck it up and buy quick heats again...knowing it'll be a once every 18-24 month thing.

Post up what has worked well for you. remember I am still using the stock glow controller and have no plans to go with a manual switch on this truck. AC60G's work very well, but not with the stock controller. So they're pretty much out.

Actually you can modify your stock controler to give you more time, by adding a resistor somewhere, can't remember where I found it but it's been done, someone already figured out which size to get the extra seconds you need for the G60's to work.
I could do a search, but I guess you also could now that you know they exist.:waytogo:

Subscribed as I'd like to do mine as well.

AC60G's seem to get mentioned everywhere but again...wtf do they fit because everyone seems to mention having to modify stuff to make them work?

I wish glow plugs didn't cost 10+ bucks a peaice, when they are no harder to make than a spark plug ,that can be had for a buck or two apeice!...its robbery, having to shell out 80+ bucks for as full set of them...I also wish they wouls come OUT when you unscrew them!...

The last batch of AC 60g's I got at Autozone ,had a "Wellman" glow plug in one of the boxes, and three "Bosch" ones, that had the same numbers stamped on them as the AC's,so maybe they are just re-boxing them now and having different suppliers make them for AC?...I had them swap me for ALL AC ones...

I'm dissatisfied with the 60g's,the first set I bought when I first got my 82 K2500 were SO rotted in 3 years,I had to use a metric socket pounded over the rusted remains of the hex on them, and was lucky I was able to get them to loosen without busting off in the head!(why they made them with dinky 10mm threads is stupid too,why not 14mm like a spark plug?.)...half of them were dead and I only started the truck maybe 100 times with them...(but at least they did not swell up and refuse to come out like the originals that were still in the engine--which still looked NEW after 15+ years!)...

I'm not looking forward to buying or replacing the glow plugs in my 85 Burb,it has A/C and the rear ones look to be a real hemmeroid to get at..I am going to try making a new wiring harness to all 8 of them from the glow plug relay first,in case its the old crappy wiring thats not energizing them--but I'm betting I have burned out most of the GP's that were in the truck I haven't replaced, due to me leaving them on far too long while trying to get the frigging thing to fire up this winter when I wanted to move it...I'll be lucky if they aren't all swelled up,especially the worst ones to get at...

I'm running AC60s, but I have both the stock gp controller with a manual override since I'm running an 18:1 engine, it needs about 25 seconds to kick over. If you can't find the resistor that's needed I'm sure the guys on TheDieselPage.com know which one is needed.

Now where are you getting your quick heats from? I very rarely hear of anyone having problems with the ones they get from Kennedydiesel.com . Though a couple places make them too.

Through Kennedy diesel...

I have wellmans in my CUCV with no problems - so far.

Do you have a part # and where did you get them?

Rene

Wellman 070's are the recommended setup for CUCV's. However I was told that they are CUCV specific and not meant for the lower powered civy system.

never heard what ajm said before.. wellmans do swell. have yet to have a ac 60 swell

I've been running Kennedy's for 5 years now and they're great. All 8 still work fine and I can glow the piss out of them (I have a manual glow switch).

I'm running AC60G's in my CUCV and a manual glow plug button. No complaints so far :dunno:
