Im going to build my truck prerunner style and i have to know what is it about a 10 bolt that everyone KNOWS its not a good axle. I am asking because i dont want to spend the money on an upgrade if i dont have to. So if you have any input that would be great.

Plans for suspension is Deaver Springs, Hydralic bumpstops, limiting straps and Fox shocks. 10 bolt axle truss, maybe?

I'll take a broad stab at it :)

The GM 10-bolt can be good or bad. I have heard people rave about it in a smaller vehicle like a Suzuki Samurai!

For a full size chevy pushing 2-3 tons curb weight I would say the 10 bolt is seriously weak. I'm not an expert so I can't rattle off the rating of a 10bolt (wish I could.) By the time you get that much weight and potentially upgraded horseower in front of it you can pretty much guarantee problems. Especially in a high torque offroad setting.

Reason two in my opinion would be the fat that it's a C-clip axle. C-clip fail = lost wheel.

Thats about all I care to stab lol.....I recently blew my 10bolt and upgraded to 14bff. Well worth it.

Thank KT that is what i wanted to hear, haha. You think i should go with the ORD cromoly axles shafts?

10 bolt rear??? id say yes you will breake it if you have a bid ass torqued engine and if you are wanting to get airborn 6+ ft in the air. Now if you just want to play in the dirt no jumping around truss it and be prepared with some extra bearings and shafts just in case, i pre run my 12 bolt no jumps and it has handled i have only messed up bearings wich messed up the axle shaft but no breakage.

If your going to jump the truck , you can't do it on a budget . 1/2 tons only live when you drive conservatively ........ or own a drag racing car LOL

Solidaxle makes six lug 14 bolt hubs if you want to run your current rim and lose a lot of weight going to discs on a 1 ton axle .

So if i do the ford 9" in the rear, what should i do in the front? and has anyone used the deaver springs before? are they worth the 2000 almost dollars i would be investing in them? A friend of mine had deaver springs in the rear of his truck with King shocks and i wasn't that impressed with his ride quality for the money he paid the shop to do it.

The springs just need to rebound. Softer or harder is "what makes the truck work?"

If I were doing it, I would run the stock springs, invest in good bypass shocks and air bump stops.

Get the truck under control in the rough stuff, then start playing with springs.

Well, deaver claims to have a long travel set of springs... dont exactly know how they did that, either smaller leafpack or longer, or both. I might try to go with some stock longer truck springs and try that... or you could make me a bolt version of your suspension KT. wouldnt mind having that

Speaking from experiance, look for another spring company. My hassles with them are something no one else should go through.

I've herd that the deavers are only good for a few years until you get sag. For almost a thousand dollars a set i hope this isn't true.

what about the classic leaf swap from stock to a larger 52" spring pack? ive herd you can get good flex, a little bit of a lift, and still a softer ride. After all its mostly the shock that does the work right? I know its kind of a rock crawler set up, but wouldn't that work for the prerunner style setup too?

You will have to move the shackle hanger backwards a bit wich will a PITA! and still the shock does all the work, do coilovers...check out dezertrangers theres a couple of nice post for coilovers.

Link no, but theres a few posts here of it, i recently put kerts fuch kit and boring the hole wider was a drag, its easy with th proper tools, like air tools
