I located a front Dana 44 off of a '70 chevy p/u. It is equipped with 3.73 gears which I had planned to upgrade to. I have heard that the 44 is a better unit with a good aftermarket support. Can I swap this into my '82 Blazer with minor mods? Will my rotors and calipers swap over to the Dana 44? I'm a little new to the swapping parts world so any help would be greatly appreciated. Please respond quickly as a plan on making the 4 hr treck to pick up the 44 tomorrow.

A 10b and a D44 are not much different in strength at all. And yes, everything from the knuckles out will swap over and be a direct bolt on.

You would be far better off swaping in a 30 spline 10 bolt than a D44. If a little bit stronger axle is what you are after. IMO a 30 spline Front 10 B is marginally stronger than a D44. 30 spline 10B have Bigger pinnion shaft, slightly better axles, larger axle tubes. But they share the same weak points. U joints, Spyder gears, the spot where the axle necks down. The D44 axle tube is slighty thicker.
D44s and 10 bolts are pretty much equal in strength. I certanly would not waste time swaping a 44 for 10 bolt if a stronger axle is what you want.
There is just as much aftermarket support for 10b. As D44 Lockers, Axles, R&P ect.

I would keep your 10 bolt axle. Like was already said, not much difference in strength between the two. I also would not swap a 30 spline 10 bolt either because if you break an axle you'll then be looking for about a 3 or 4 year only replacement axle. There are MANY 28 spline axles out there. I can see you wanting to swap the axle since it has the gears you're looking for but a 4 hour drive to get that isn't worth it.

Thanks guys. I decided to keep my 10 bolt and make the necessary changes to it. It's nice to have your knowledge and input right at my fingertips. After reading your responses, it was an easy, straight forward decision.

Thanks again.

Ughh I would say that your reason for putting the d44 in is the only good one. Thats the reason I'm putting one in. Its cheaper to get the rear with the proper gears and rebuild them than have gear setup in yours. Plus then you have a rebuilt front end.
