gm 14 bolt tube numbers

and how can i see what the buildate was then ?? my other car has a 14 bff too, but the difference is that that one uses a key and a clip for setting the wheel bearings, and this one has two rings and a whasher with extensions that you have too bent too lock the rings :dunno:

It doesn't really matter. They used 2 or 3 different ways of securing the hub nuts.

If you pull the cover, you can check the date of the ring and pinion, it won't tell you the exact build date, but will give you the month and year of the gears inside, assuming there stock...Its stamped on the ring gear outside diameter.

GM did stamp axle codes on the axle tubes somewhere--usually not where they tell you to look though!--we often had to wire brush both axle tubes and find the code whenwe'd pull one (or previous to yanking one ) out of a donor at the junkyard--one you find the code ,which is usually 3 letters like "GTR" as an example,a dealer parts counterman can look up the code and tell you what it came from, the ratio, whether or not it was posi, and the year ...somtimes just pulling the cover off is faster & easier, but we prefered to not open up and drain one if possible,we had enough waste oil to dispose of,and if it turned out the customer didn't buy it for whatever reason,we now had an "empty" diff that would sweat and rust up inside to store!..

just found the year of build on the ringgear whitch looks too be original , its the 8th month of 1975, it had an open 4.56 diff, now changed it too a 4.56 with the G80 locker. i thanks for the support
