One of the big problems with installing a high lift performance cam into the engine you are looking at will be the press-in rocker studs. I would not worry about the warranty because if you install this engine yourself...that voids the warranty right there. At least, that is the argument they will try to use. I bought a brand new GM Goodwrench TBI 350 swirl-port crate engine from Jegs, and installed it myself (in the truck pictured). I put a small RV cam into it, and the thing runs pretty good, but it does not have all that much power.

Can't expect much with a 7000k truck running a small block....

I know. This thing came stock with one of those little 200-HP/300 foot pound torque 350 TBI swirl-port engines. The cam and TBI mods I did to the engine only added about maybe 30 more horse power.

I bought an l31 from radley last year to put in my k20. I'd have to look at my warranty paperwork, but I believe it only comes with a 12 month (parts only) warranty. The advertised warranty only applies when the engine is installed in it's factory application (late 90s GMT400 truck or suv) by a gm dealer or certified repair shop. They should call you after you buy it and ask for the VIN of the vehicle it's being installed in for the warranty.

whats your input on this engine . 96-03 vortec 350 250hp/330ftlb .

thinking grab this and toss in my 1ton k30 for good strong motor for basic work duty . https://ck5.com/forums/threads/budget-beater-the-spacer-ring-is-inplace-now.332759/

i also have a brand new set of these i could toss on it i have never used . https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-1417-16

just thinking out loud . whats your opinion ?

Same engine, 11 cent cheaper and only $45 for lift gate if you need it.

placed my order today . should be here by end of the week at most . only few states away .

I would have rather gone with the same Vortec engine you ordered, but I have to pass smog, and the Vortec engine does not have a provision for an EGR like the swirl-port TBI engines came with. The EGR is the one and only smog item the Las Vegas Clark County smog techs looks for when smogging my truck. I know I can do some modifications to add one to a Vortec engine, but if I get a smog tech that knows what he is looking at, he might figure out that I have a different engine than what my truck came with originally. That would be considered an "engine change", and that causes a whole new hassle of going to a smog referee station.

Veering off topic, but do they actually test egr operation?

I assume the ~$500 tbi-vortec intakes have external egr provisions, but the valve still resides on the intake. Since the valve isn't doing anything, the "feed" pad for the egr could be left open. As you said, if someone knew exactly what they were looking at they might be able to figure it out, but since tbi and carbs all used crossover to feed the egr, and the valve looks the same, and still sits on the intake, I think it would be hard to tell.

At least on my vortec tpi base the egr "feed pad" is on the passenger rear above #8, and if it is on the tbi-vortec intakes as well, couldn't that be buried under the external coil/bracket? Just thinking out loud...

if i recall you need to use 96-00 exhaust manifolds and egr feed tube to the vortec tbi special intake . this might cause a half smart tech to red flag it for mix and match parts .

I fail to understand.

Yes, They do a visual and look to see if it "appears " to be connected and functional. They do not do an actual functional test like in California.

BINGO!

no thats rear coolant out to heater core port .

the egr goes pass side front just behind the t-stat spot there . and tbi engines its just rear of the tbi unit pad mount on pass side . = huge difference and red flag to inspectors.

Ahh, didn't catch that. It's where the TPI Vortec intake gets it's EGR. You think they'd catch the EGR itself being moved eh? If it's enough of a worry, I can understand then. "Good" thing is that there are a fair number of rebuilds (not sure about crates) that have better heads that make it a bit simpler to keep the emissions appearance up. What a real hassle to deal with.
