I found this in a post and was wondering if it is true? I can't find anything listed for thick 5.13 GM D60 gears.

This was posted by MuddinManny in the post "What's under your ride."

Chevy Dana 60, Blt 11 25 88, 4.56 Precision "Thick" Gears, 1410 Saddle Pinion Yoke, Power-Lok, stock 35 spline inners, Yukon 1541 35 spline outers, Spicer SPL 55-3x u-joints, new Dana Spicer Upper and Lower King Pins w/all goodies, ORD Cross-over Steering, Superlift dual steering stabilizer, Bendix 1 ton calipers, Warn Premium 62672 35 spline lockout hubs.

there are no thick gears for a d60 on precision gears website. When i bought mine, i had to get a new carrier.

there is a part number for thick 5.13 gears for a reverse cut (ford) dana 60, no gm.

i think there is a certain kind of spacer you have to run in order for it to work without the thick gears.

Yes, you can get a spacer. If I can find thick gears then I would go that way instead. I have 4.10's now and plan to go to 5.13's and don't plan to change out my Powerlok.

unless they developed them in the past 6 months or so, there are no thick cut d60 gears for GM axles. HP ford, yes, LP gm, no.

Crap, I missed that detail. I'm looking to buy a 4.10 GM D60 and regear it to 4.88 - looks like I'll need a new carrier too. I though for sure that I had seen one someplace, but now I can't find it - I was probly looking at HP gears and didn't know it.

Maybe Santa will bring me an ARB - actually he won't, I haven't been that good this year.

oops

edit, reverse gear, i read that about 4 or 5 times to make sure, and missed reverse until i posted it LOL

That is reverse rotation for a HP axle.

If anybody can find a thick (for 4.10 and down case) 4.88 gear for GM LP D60 I'd be much obliged.

How many different D60 carriers are there? IIRC there is 4:10 and down, 4:56 and up, and a special D61 carrier. I think the HP uses one of the "normal" carriers.

So, if that is right, I could get a carrier from any D60, any make, front or rear that has 4:56 and up gears and it would work in my theoretical 4:10 K30 D60 front.

I would much rather do that than get a spacer.

Yeah, but thats for a 4.56 and up case, so it's not a "thick" gear.

Are the internals all the same between cases? In other words, could I swap the spider and side gears, etc. from a 4.10 and down case to a 4.56 and up case?

PORC has 4.56 and up empty cases for $80.

I saw that on pirate too.

Some research:

If you look at the bottom of this page it lists four loaded carriers:

706036-X (3.33 - 4.10)
706037-X (4.56 - 7.17)
706840-X (3.33 - 4.10)
706182X (4.56 - 7.17)

I wonder what the other two are?

PORC's $80 4.56 and up empty carrier matches the 706041x PN of the Dana 4 series case. Randy's also has an empty 4.56 and up case for $90.

BillaVista also shows only one PN for cross shafts and two PNs for spider gear kits (30 and 35 spline) - I am assuming that would include the side gears?

Randy's also lists only just three spider kits for the D60, with the only apparent difference being the spine count (30, 32, 35).

That makes me think that I gould get a 4.10 LP front D60, buy a regular 4.88 gear set and 4.56 and up empty carrier and swap the internals from the old carrier to the new. That allows me to regear to match my rear axle without using a spacer for only $80 more.

What did I overlook?

706182X 4.56 - 7.17 Case, Loaded 35 Spline Axles, Open Loaded Carrier

706840-X 3.33 - 4.10 Case, Loaded

706037-X 4.56 - 7.17 Case, Loaded 30 Spline Axles, Open Loaded Carrier

706036-X 3.33 - 4.10 Case, Loaded 30 Spline Axles, Open Empty Carrier

That is what I found for the part number break down. Yes, you can get a new open series 4 carrier and swap your current spider gear set into it and get a reg. ring and pinion to go onto your new carrier. Or you could get the series 3 5.13 standard cut ring and pinion and put it on your current carrier. What ever way you decide they both will work.

Randy doesn't sell the thick standard cut ring and pinion set, Summit does though. You will be paying about the same price for either ring and pinion, but if you go with a reg. ring and pinion you'll pay an addtional $80 for the new carrier. Just a thought.
