I have found in a salvage yard a late '80s Chevy 4x4 dualy, front axle for $300. I looked at it and it was a dana 60 (even said 60F next to diff cover and Yes I do know what one looks like I own two trucks with them) But it hand Ball joints!!! It had Spicer hubs and diff on pass side and low pinion like my other ones. so the question is did Gm release some bj 60's at the end of the solid axle run or is this truck from Mars?

what in the world...thats the craziest thing ive heard. i cant take your word, im gonna have to see it to believe it...

I will post pictures but it will be a while I dont have a digital camera or scanner but I have never seen it before.

I don't doubt that you saw a BJ D60 I just doubt that it is a factory application especially since it has Spicer Hubs on it. Spicer has not been an O.E.M. hub supplier , for a Dana 60, since 1981.
Could it have been a conversion truck - some large company's will convert already purchased vehicles to 4WD when needed .
Anyway pic's would be great and the more detailed the better.

Was the passenger side leaf spring perch casted into the housing ? and if so did the inner side of it have studs going through the u-bolt plate?

IIRC Dodge did have BJ D60's in the early years that were pass drop. Probably a Dodge D60 swapped into the Chevy.

Yeah dodge used balljoints on their 44's just like chevy.
Dodge dana 60s used kingpins from 1975 until 1993.
If its a late model 60, and its low pinion, its gotta be from a dodge though. but it will be driver drop.

my guess is d44 with some goofy drw d44, or some sort of d44.

I'm talking about a Dodge axle from the late 60's early 70's. IIRC the Chiltons/Motors book tells about the ball joint pre-load on the early D60 axles.

Okay It is Dana 60 not 44, it has pass diff and spring purch cast in to the center setion like on my 73 1 ton. It has a dump bodyon it and plow,it could be a conversion. When I can convince someone to let me borrow a good camera I WILL post pics.

I might be way wrong on this but I "think" the Dodge open knuckle D60's came out in about, or around, 1974. Before that was the closed knuckle stuff.
GM started their version of the open knuckle D60 in 1977.

iirc Dodge first used the open knuckle 60 in '75. i don't think dodge ever used a closed knuckle 60, just the closed knuckle d44 and d70. anyway, the closed knuckle axles still had kingpins.

i've seen internationals and fords with c/k D60's, but they had kingpins too.

Could be that someone took a 60 center and put 44 outers on it. Don't know why someone would do that, but i asked the same thing about a Ford 3/4 ton that i thought would have 60s in it, it had a 10 bolt front that someone swapped the tubes on, made it a super rare driver drop 10 bolt. lol

check to see what the brakes look like then...
