I have heard people at work say that GM is dropping the Duramax.(GM dealership) I have also heard that a Cat or Cummins will take it's place, does anybody have any info on this? I can't seem to find anything.

Well it aint gonna be a Cummins cause dodge has the contract with them, doubtful on a cat, but why would they drop it? They own it and they aint had any problems out of it like ford had with navistar and the pos 6.4

I'd be really interested if they went with CAT, which i can't see, but that'd be pretty cool

A GM CAT partnership has been rumored since the early 80's.

Personaly Id say its just a rumor because there is no viable reason to drop the duramax. Its built by izuzu but last I knew GM owned the majority of Izuzu.

Only possible reason I can even think of, is future emission standards could be more expencive than a partnership with a diesel engine company, such as cat cummins or detroit.

EDIT: Just wanted to mention just because dodge uses cummins does not mean another company couldnt use them as well. Cummins has been bounced around major semi companies such as kenworth and peteerbuilt as the standard engine offered. Same way with cat. Its very possible in the future you could go to the dealership and order the pickup you want with the engine you want. Like a chevy with a powerstroke or a ford with a cummins ect. the way you can with a semi.

On the cummins deal, I remember hearing about their contract with dodge that it stipulated that they only be available in light duty dodge trucks. Of course that could have been a rumor too, but you never know.

As for the d-max, GM sold Isuzu, but still owns the d-max portion of it. Go kick around on www.gminsidenews.com and you'll find a ton of info in the forums, that is, if you can sort through the bs

The latest version of the Duramax was designed without Isuzu's help. As mentioned above GM sold it's majority ownership in Isuzu so this might be some of the basis for the rumors you heard.

I've read that is very unlikely to see a Cat in a light duty truck. Cat is setup to mass produce light duty diesel engines like cummins and international.

I'ts not true, the 6.6 WILL stay for quite some time. We make the exhaust for GM, and were already tooling up for the 2011 -2013 models. I see the pre-production models going in for emissions testing everyday.

I also have a buddy on the inside development of the engine. He couldn't say much other than the new 6.6's will be in the 400hp and 700 ft pound torque range with a new turbo design and engine management, which doesn't really surprise me at all.

The 4.5 diesel GM created on their own is going to be a beast too, the GM diesel is not dead!:D

Is that what you meant to say? Otherwise it doesn't make sense:confused:

Yeah theres no reason that Cummins couldnt sign with GM. They already have contracts with Dodge AND Ford. Look it up 550's and up can or could at least get a 5.9 cummins in them.

Alas I think the day we see a cummins in a GM is the day they bring the solid axle back .... :doah:

The last I had heard, Ford had controlling stock in Cummins and was considering non-renewal for the contract with Dodge. Rumor had it they decided to renew, but without exclusivity. Whether anything changed since then, I don't know. P.S., I love my Duramax:D

Ford used to have some stock in Cummins but sold that several years ago. That tidbit is posted on Cummins website BTW. The interesting thing is whats going to happen now that Navistar has bought the medium duty line from GM. Does that mean the 466 instead of the small Cat in the 4500 series and up?

As long as they don't put that POS 6.4L in any of them. That's what was in the MXT I saw at a show last year. I read the article on Navistar.com about the GM med duties going to Navistar and it was pretty vague about any details.
