Ok, not C/K related obviously, but I need advice:

1996 GMC Safari rear wheel drive 4.3l 4l60e trans Conversion van. Earlier tonight my wife and I started it up and the digital gear display and odometer didn't light up. When driving home the SES light came on (this is an early 96 or late 95 that still has OBD I) and the trans felt like it was in drive/OD and didn't shift up or down. About halfway home (1.5 mile drive total) the display came on and the torque converter locked in like it should have done. After that, shifting is normal up and down, and display comes on immediately after starting. On the last trip I noticed the odometer display reset a couple times like I had just started the van, while I was going down the street. The actual mileage is not resetting, but the display itself is resetting.

What would cause the trans to stay in drive when the display is not lit? Could this be wiring and temperature related? Outside temps were around 15* at the time of these issues.

Before anyone suggests it, I checked fluid levels and it was about a pint low, but nowhere near enough to cause issues. Trans doesn't leak any appreciable amount, that pint was about 6-7 months worth of drop in level.

Is this more likely to be a computer or wiring issue? The SES light is still on, and I will attempt to run the codes when it is light again, but I need ideas of what I am looking at. I can't afford to lose the van, it is my only currently licensed and reliable distance traveller, nor can I afford to replace it just yet. All shifting is normal since then, at least the normal that I am used to for the last almost 3.5 years we have owned this van.

Obviously run the codes, but this sounds like a wiring problem. Might even be related to the ignition switch.
Sounds like something did not get power when you cranked it.

If it does it again, turn it off and try re-cranking it. Plus check any grounds around the computer.

Sounds like the trans is going into limp mode. I would start by checking the TPS switch since the trans uses it for shift input.

I'm leaning towards wiring issues at the PCM, but I was wrong and it is OBD II and I don't have any with a scanner available.

The reason I am thinking wiring is that about a week ago the battery went out on the van. When I was replacing it, I went ahead and hit the battery tray and battery connections with a baking soda and hot water mixture. What I didn't notice at the time is that the PCM sits directly left of the battery tray and all the connectors were in the path of the mixture. It may not have affected it, but it seems odd that the display went out (controlled by the PCM) and the trans went into limp mode just a week or so after I did this. The grounds around the PCM are good, at least the ones I could find, and I have not duplicated the situation.

I will have a buddy of mine run the codes Monday to see what I get. Luckily I am off work for a few days so I have time to try and resolve this.

Well, the problem was in the PCM, but I didn't have time or money to deal with it, so I spent a bunch of money I don't have yet. Traded it in on a 04 Durango that is pretty nice.
