Going after a brake leak, wish me luck!

I made a pressure bleeder out of a weed sprayer. I have like $20 in it. There's videos on how to make em all over YouTube

It isn't fun to get any in your eyes either !--I had a good squirt get me right in the eye once while bench bleeding a master cylinder in a vise on the bench...eye swelled up like crazy and I was not able to see with it for several hours..
Now after having cataracts removed and plastic artificial lenses installed,I'm paranoid about getting brake fluid, brake kleener or carb cleaner in my eyes...been more vigilant about wearing safety goggles since that was done..

and the master needs the cap / top lid on or fluid will go every were when pushed .

the top was on the master cylinder when my girlfriend slammed on the brake pedal. it didn't seem to do much to prevent the fluid from shooting out the top. came right off. mine doesn't really stay on all that well it seems. it's just a black soft rubber piece... dunno if that is stock or what. a lot of youtube videos that I saw had caps that screwed on the top or clamped on. mine just sits on there.

@Kain I sprayed down the engine bay with some water afterward. hopefully I got all the brake fluid off. I'm glad we had a spray bottle layin around!

@diesel4me dang that is scary, I should probably wear my safety goggles more than I do...

You need to post a pic of the brake master cap, sounds like you are missing something...

That's just the gasket. You're missing the actual cap.

Here's what the cap looks like.

In that pic, the cap looks like it has some hinges on the side... are there metal clamps of some sort that I am missing as well? Something that "reaches up" and snaps the cap down?

EDIT: Doesn't look like it from engine bay pics on Google. I'll grab a cap next time I'm at AutoZone. Gotta pick up more brake fluid for the bleed anyhow.

In your first post you said your buddy was pressing on the brake while you looked for the leak. If that reservoir cap wasn’t on there it wouldn’t have created any pressure to force fluid out the place where it was leaking and you would have had fluid all over the place like you found out a few days later. I’m guessing you or your buddy took it off and it was misplaced or thrown away.

Being 100% honest, I don't remember it ever being there. I'm gonna run by AutoZone after work today and pick one up. I called ahead and they have one in stock! :woot:

I think when my buddy was pressing on the brake pedal, he was doing so gently. When my GF hit the brake pedal the first time, she did it gently while I was watching the master. The gasket sorta "flexed" or "breathed" inward. That's when I told her to slam 'em and the fluid shot out the top. Lessons learned, every day... :D

In any case, since brake fluid is hygroscopic, I’d replace all the fluid in the master cylinder and do a complete flush of the brake lines. Start from the farthest brake from the MC to the closest - that means pass. rear, driver rear, pass front, driver front.

Those are plastic tabs. It doesn't hinge. You use the tabs to help pry it off.

and you do NOT slam the brakes . thats what pops lines that are old and rusty .

also when bleading brakes slow steady smooth motion on the pedal . i always do 3 pumps and hold on the 3rd . anymore is just a waste .

let the pedal come back between each pump and then pump it . dont let the pedal come back and sit tho . this will loose the fluid volume you built up .

fast pumping or hard slam pumps = foamed fluid and lots of time and work to get that out of the system.

I remember I had a friend help me bleed brakes and he started pumping the pedal like the rabbit Thumper in Bambi. I said what the hell dude and he said he'd never bled brakes before and he thought it would go faster that way. :doah:
