My '89 Blazer has a flow master cat back dual setup that I hate. Getting old and don't like the noise anymore.
Plus with new lift, I need to re-do y-pipe so figured I'd kill to birds with one stone. I was looking Magna-flow muffler and 3" pipe back from the cat.
Anybody running a single, throw up your experience!

Some one posted up a link to a complete exhaust system just the other day,,,sold by Jegs ,,,manifolds to exhaust pipe tip.... Single 3" setup...

Jegs/ Summit are good places to start if you want to go the DIY route...

My plan is to buy stuff from walker exhaust. I am going to get a stock muffler for a 1995 suburabn with 454, and in my case, the tail pipe off a 87 k30 with 454. But in your case yuo could just get a tail pipe from a 90 blazer. Im pretty sure they are 3".

Thanks guys
Walker...forgot about them. Must do more research on mufflers.
I figure with a somewhat stock TBI and no headers, a single will work just fine.
New y-pipe needs to go under the oil pan or inspection cover ALA K5Octane to clear front driveshaft.
Not sure how 3" bolt on kit goes into a 2.5" manifold...

The manifolds are 2.25" output, the y pipes are 2.25" which converge into one 3". If i remember right.

in my first picture you can see how I reused the stock y pipe connector and welded to the new y pipe. It's super thick steel, enlarged it some, and put inside the new pipe. No leaks is good enough for me :D

though you don't really need 2.5", since you're making it yourself, go 2.25 and find a flowmaster collector from Summit.

Sounds like you are looking for quiet.

The 70 series flowmasters have never done me wrong. We had 2 family/mom vehicles with that setup, and was happy with the quiet tone, but still a little more aggressive than stock when the go-pedal is pinned.

Doh! :doah:
Never even thought about where they join up in to main pipe...makes sense now.
Say just how do you tell a one FlowMaster from another? Length?

Model number. The insides are different. But the website has some good examples of tone.

Yes, the quieter ones tend to be longer/larger, but you really gotta look up the model number to figure out what it is.

press ur lips against it and blow :haha:

You could probably look at the list on Summit, see if each series has different sizes. Otherwise I don't know. I'm very happy with my 50 series 3"/3". I have one on my s10 also 2.5"/2.5". And you know Irish, I don't have much insulation :D Not annoying at all, I hate droning exhausts.

I love my 50 series, but on a blazer, its not quiet.

If you like the sound of your exhaust, 50's are great. Good tone, minimal drone.

But you hear it.

If you want quiet, go 70 series.

Now thats sound advice! Get!? Sound! :haha:

oh boy...

I bet I could fart into a rice rocket muffler and it would sound wicked!!:haha:bawaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I see you reading Irish....:D

Went and gave it a quick measure. 13" long so they are either 40 or Super 40 series I'm guessing. Did a half a*s look for numbers but didn't see any. Check again in the daylight.
I've had big block Chevelles & Novas plus race car stuff over the years and I'm so done with drone. Good for light to light but hours on the highway with family not so much.

Your truck is fairly loud, I can hear it coming up the alley pretty easy. But, I don't think it's a super 40, those I believe are louder than a standard 40. Either way, they are only two chamber I think. The 50 gets you 3 chamber. If quiet is what you want, maybe the 70 series like everyone said is the ticket. If you still want exhaust sound but without the freeway or cruising drone, the 50 series is a good compromise.

Wish my truck was running, you could hear first hand :(

Didnt' realize you had a set you were trying to identify. 40's, super 40's, 44's, are all loud. Way louder than the 50 series.

The part number is raised right across the face of the muffler. But, it'll probably have to be light out for you to decipher.

I went stock on my 91 Silverado (fully loaded, carpet, etc), and I'm in my 40's and want to hear the stereo not the engine. Here's what I did:

I bought this "system":

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/flo-17161/overview/make/chevrolet/year/1991/model/blazer

And bought a Y-Pipe from eBay.

Then ...

1. Tried the muffler with it. Pretty loud. Not as loud as the 70 Series I tried later, but still too much for me.

2. Tried the Flowmaster 50 series. Wow. Loud. Returned that without even driving it.

3. Tried the 70 series. Still loud. Drones plenty while driving.

4. Picked up a Walker stock muffler. It's pretty quiet, but still has a nice little sound to it if I get on the gas. Otherwise it's a very mild exhaust note. No one will pay you any attention. I can hear the stereo just fine. Plus it was cheap. Something like $50.

Personally, I want something even more quiet!
