Looking for advice, I'm gathering parts to start working on my new K5. My plans are to have 12'' lift and 39.5 Boggers(I don't want to cut the fenders). What I need help with is what is the best way to get 12 inches of lift. The only source of info that I have from anyone I know is my Dad and he's been out of the game since the late 80's... He's telling me not to go with a shackle lift as it makes them drive like crap he says, but looking at peoples rigs and reading up online it seems to be the thing to do, but I know I don't want blocks out back either. At this point its probably best I tell you what I have and how I plan to use it.

I recently bought an 87' K5 to make a toy out of. It has what is said to be 22'' lift on 18/39.5 boggers. The way it was done is not safe. It has what I think is 8 inch springs, 4 inch blocks and a 5 inch shackle in the rear and 8 inch springs and an 8 inch shackle in the front plus a 6 inch body lift... It will be street driven and mostly just a mud toy, light trail riding at the beach and local mud parks, no major crawling and down the road when I can build my 454 I have for it, I will run trail class mud bog with it.

My main concern is how does the shackle lift effect on/offroad handling and is it the best way to achieve the desired 12 inches of lift in the rear? I've been looking at ORD's 2.5'' shackle flip + the 6'' super shackles with my 8'' springs to get to the 12 inches. After reading up on their website I don't think what is on the truck is what is needed. What about up front, what is needed up for the best results? I had been looking at a set of 12'' superlift springs for the front. I have also checked into a full 12'' spring lift from places like Atlas. I was told and expect that something with that much arch will ride pretty stiff and not have much flex, but living in south Texas there is not many/any rocks to crawl on and I don't have any desire to do any crawling... I just want to play in the mud:D I will also be doing crossover steering so no need to bring that up. I can post better pictures of parts of the lift if anyone needs to see anything better.

Thank you for the help! Looking forward to what everyone has to say lol...

Wow that is way too tall lol.

Glad you want to get it more managable.

I have a shackle flip in the rear of mine, and it rides just fine on the street. No regrets at all on or offroad.

Best prescription for 12" of lift, if you must have it (because in mine and a lot of people on heres opinion over 8in is just too much). but regardless.

Front: 2 drop spring hanger crossmember, 4in 52in long springs (will give you 8in of lift and still ride good, zero rate (1in), longer shackle (another 1in).

Rear: DIY4x 4" shackle flip (4in), 6in lift springs, zero rate (1in), longer shackle (1in).

And that with no body lift

6" bodylift, holy deathtrap.... :eek1:

kinda silly running a 2.5 flip when you want that much height..

get a 4" DIY4X flip with some 6" x-tied shackles, some 6" springs and maybe a zero rate if ya need a bit more..

up front I'd say run some 4" 52's, a 2" drop hangar, a bit longer shackle and maybe a zero rate if it needs a bit more..

or take the zero rates out and run a 1" BL...

go 12" Superlift kit, all spring. With 12" of lift IMO you don't want soft ride anything...the damn thing'll flop over in a turn.

Couldn't have said it better myself

never saw your's, you posted while I was typing mine... mediocre minds must think alike I suppose...

Id agree with this actually.

With 52s up front I know if want some sort of anti sway bar with that much lift.

I wouldn't really think of a 4" 52 spring as soft.. it'd certainly flex better and ride a ton smoother, but I wouldn't refer to it as weeeemp waaaaa....

4 link, coil overs and subframe. Most 8"+ leafsprings are going to ride like crap.

Maybe a subframe with stock 63" leaves in the back and 4" lift 52" long springs in the front. Drop the body lift down to 1" aluminum spacers.

That would be great but I'm thinking that will be just a little bit out of my budget...

Is there anyway to find out for sure what size lift springs I have? The guy I got the truck from traded and Jeep for it(which if he traded a running/driving jeep for it he got boned on that deal...) and I can't get into contact with the guy that built it so I don't know any of the little stuff like that...

Thanks for the reply's, It really helps.

Think I'm going to have to agree with this too. I don't know how road friendly lifted 52s will be with out some sort of panhard bar. When I had crossover steer, stock (but brand new) 52s and 7.25" shackle, steering hard on pavement would actually move the whole axle side to side. I now have full hydro and it doesn't happen at all.

You have lots of options for the rear though. I would do 56 or 64" long rear springs (56 are an easier swap into a k5) 4" shackle flip and 8" spring. If you are ditching the top and swapping for a pickup truck tail gate, you might be able to get away with a 4" shackle flip, 6" spring and 1" zero rate
