Okay so here's what I want to do. Go EFi. (let the flaming begin)

My only problem is what route to go.

I'd love to just throw in a Ram Jet 350 and associated accoutrement but I don't have the 6000 grand to do that.

My choices are going with a reman/junkyard efi engine;

or I thought about getting one of these for the 350 I have now and rocking this way:

Which one? and what would be my best in the long run?

Why would anyone flame you?

I would just use a junkyard TBI unit. Replacement parts will be cheap, and readily available.

Well its like the Chevy/Ford thing. Carb/EFI
I've had some pretty, well lets say enthusiastic people express their opinion on it.

I'm going to have to check into the TBI conversion. Any special ECU unit or anything like that? Or is it all mechanical?

***Anyone know how to edit the poll to include TBI?***

There is NO BENEFIT to a carburetor on any off road rig.

Chevy factory TBI setup. Simple and works. Can be upgraded and well, it works...did I mention it's simple?

I don't know your budget , but if you got nearly 3 grand to buy a system , and not enough to buy the ramjet ..... why not go TBI from a beater truck you can sell parts off of after stripping the TBI , and take the leftover money and buy other goodies for your truck :)

I still wheel the Q jet that originally came on my truck and I put it through more than most, I've had my truck on end a bunch of times. It gets the job done and doesn't hold me back.

If I were looking at aftermarket fuel injection I'd look at this long before the Edelbrock setup.

I am seriously considering it now. I was on the ultra high end of budget to even look at the EFI conversion kits, but it would have been doable with some creative budgeting.

why on earth would you want EFI over a quadrajet?

Well my carb is a simple malfunctioning Edelbrock. If I was good enough and tuning I would try rebuilding and tuning it but I always seem to get something wrong and end up smelling like I've bathed in gasoline everytime I drive with the rear window down.

Now a quadrajet..I have never had any experience in that ballpark.

I've got a Ramjet (although I have yet to run it :( , I'm still trying to finish the rest of the truck), during my research the best alternative similar system was the Accel DFI. The Holly system had some rough history, so I read, many people were unhappy with it, everything I read about the Accel DFI system was positive. The Edelbrock system had mixed reviews, but generally, worked just fine.

The Accel system, IMO, they had by far the most research and development into it and seemed a much more thought out and complete system. I don't remember the specifics, sadly, as I did this research 3 years or so ago.

I do remember a guy on here battling with his Holley TBI forever. Do a search and it should be found.

Since when is EFI a ford thing and Carbs a GM thing lol ????

Do a stock TBI take out. Its extremely simple. TPI is also nice but requires 8/9 injectors vsr 2. Plus it takes up more room in the engine bay.

For less than the price of some of these aftermarket injection systems, you could have an entire ls gen III engine and trans.
Hey, I'm where your at right now and last week I picked up a 5.3 w/ 4l60e for $1200.
The swap meet today had 5.3 for $1500 and a 6.0 for $1800.
These are complete engines with way more potenial than that of the past.
Just another direction to look at all's I'm say'in.

i have a TPI in my camaro, and i always said, it was the best truck engine GM ever made :) awesome low end torque, and they even make a baseplate to run TPI on a vortec headed small block. If i were builidng a small block for a truck, TPI/vortec is without question the way i would go.

BUT for cost and simplicity, its hard to beat a factory TBI system, thats for sure.

although i did have a q-jet on my 1977 olds, and loved that setup. IMHO the Q-jet was the best carb ever built for a daily driven, multi use vehicle.

Just using it as a comparison on the varied opinions of what is the best setup.

Thats sounds like a good idea as well but sounds like a lot more work retrofitting a new engine and tranny in vs the TBI setup. Anyone know of a writeup on this swap?

I found a complete L59 (flex fuel version of the 5.3L LM7) for 300 bucks. Gen III is the way to go. </my $0.02>

I have EFI experience. It's really just a matter of budget, and desired end results. Here are some pics of the projects I've worked on.

In my humble opinion, I'd start with the 350 roller block (even better if it's 4 bolt main / forged steel crank), port fuel injection (Factory or Edelbrock does not really matter until 5000 RPM). Use the Corvette under hood ECM, custom program the PROM. Leave everyone else in the rear view mirror.:D Have money left in wallet.
