Going from a Th700r4 to a TH400 in my diesel

Sorry to hear that. 6.2 engines are fairly common in junk yards and Craigslist. Might be a good opportunity to pick up a mechnical IP 6.5 to drop in there.
Yea there are a few CUCVs around here that I am hoping will turn up a decent engine. Knowing the crack problem I won't be getting anything unless I can pull the pan and check it out before bringing it home.

Diesel repair is what I did for a living. It's hit or miss with them. Don't concern yourself with the mileage on the engine, just pull the pan and look at it. I have seen low mileage engines with cracks and high mileage engines that were clean as a whistle. Have your heads cleaned up while you are looking, machine work takes time. Then look for a good block. If you find two, one will be good....

Good call, I had already bought gaskets and head bolts for this one, so a replacement will be getting those.

I make a habit of having the blocks hot tanked and magnafluxed. Even if I don't get any real machine work done on them. The cost is minimal to replacing an engine. Then you will start with a super clean block and know every little knick or crack that is in it. Sometimes they are not noticeable with the naked eye at all. Magnafluxing will absolutely tell the tale. I have seen tons of them that were pulled, cleaned up and put right back together with just a honing of the cylinders in my shop.

It's been a while since I have updated this but here is what has happened:
I found an M1008 engine locally and it was such low mileage the cross hatching was still in the cylinders! The bad part was it had sat for years without an air cleaner or vacuum pump so the engine was full of sand. I tore it down, steam cleaned everything and did bearings and gaskets, oil pump and so on. I was just about to drop it back in the Suburban after a 3 week trip to Nebraska and when I opened the hood, pigeons made a nest in the battery tray with two new chicks. Well I couldn't kill the little guys so according to the internet they have about a week left before they leave the nest.
I located the drivetrain from an '80 K30 with the sm456 and np205 which I was going to swap instead of the th400, but then one last craigslist search turned up a 2000 4x4 3500 nv4500 for $400 so I am picking that and some hydroboost pedals from an '87 R3500 up tomorrow. Hopefully the trans isn't junk and I can start putting this thing back together, we are trying to do the Desert Run in Johnson Valley in October.
