I have one that was just rebuilt less a new chain (I know, I know). It's set up for VSS. I'm thinking of selling it as I clean out my garage. What is a good price to list it for on craigslist?

If you can find a trusting soul you might get more out of it, but I'd not (and don't) pay more than $100 for a case that I didn't hear and see run and operate, and even then it's no guarantee that it's actually any good.

No different than an engine or a transmission. The majority of sellers out there are probably not scumbag, unfortunately those that are, have ruined it for most everyone else. I don't trust anyone on there anymore. I'll buy things from craigslst, but only when I think the price is worth taking the risk that I may just be throwing my money away.

FWIW, one of the two or three 241's I bought had somehow had a groove worn in the oil pump tube. Not much more wear and it would have gone all the way through. Not some catastrophic failure, but certainly not a piece I'd reuse....but the only way to know something like that is going on, is to tear the case apart, and at that point, you have to figure out how much your time is worth too. A decent chain runs what, $80?

Edit: Good point below. I assumed this was a 90-91 passenger drop for these trucks, but it could be for anything.

In general really depends on what spline count, drop, auto or manual shift, and if it is SYE equipped. 32 spline driver drop manual shift is going to be your highest dollar version for the offroad community. Might get upwards of $250 for one without SYE. Add $200-$300 for SYE. 32 spline passenger drop manual shift $150-200 without SYE. Also a very big factor that comes into play is what your local market will bear unless you are going to ship. Some places in the US parts go for much much less than others.

Run of the mill np241 from behind a th350 or 700r4, $100

Just my experience and opinion.

Junkyard pick n pull here gets $150. I think that's a bit much unless it's 32 spline input. I like $100 for 27 spline.

A lot has to do with how common they are in your area. Around here a passenger drop with electronic VSS is rare. I had bought a 1990 K5 for parts to use the tcase and front axle for my SAS, ended up selling the tcase and front axle for more then I paid for the complete truck. $300-for the K5, $300 for the case and $100 for front 10 bolt. The person I sold it to was also doing a SAS, I also knew where there was a 77-79 Ford HP D44 for $150 so it was obvious to sell and profit.
The junkyards wanted $400-$500 for a pass drop 241 and a normal drivers drop 27 spline is around $75-100

I was just thinking the other day there may come a time in the not too distant future that we won't be able to find square-body parts so easy any more. I notice the local pick n pull is starting to have more and more late 90s early 00s stuff.

Here it's not often you find a square body with many parts left on it in a salvage yard..most parts you find here at at swap meets or on craigslist from private parties...and prices are going up as supply dwindles..:(

Yep. If you think you may need the stuff in the future, and have the means, get it now. I've got spares of most everything I can get my hands on for this reason. I remember the days of rows and rows of 73-87 trucks and '78-88 g-bodies sitting the wrecking yards, new every week. Now you'll be lucky to find one, and they've normally been butchered so bad by every previous owner that nothing is worth taking.

The '87-91 Suburbans are about it for donors in these parts anymore. Still somewhat common, they didn't all get crushed, no thanks to a certain president out to save the world.

In my area the yards usually have a few square bodies, but they're almost always pickups. Usually for most of the parts I've needed I've been able to scrounge from them and vans of similar vintage.
