Going S10 Hybrid!

Re: Going Hybrid!

Hello?

[/ QUOTE ]No offense, but the "HELLO?" posts less than 24-48 hours after the initial posts, are promptly followed by rolled eyes, and discountments of the initial posts. Just for future reference... /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Going Hybrid!

No offense but if you don't have anything to say that is related to the original post don't waste everyone elses time. Besides all your little tip will do is get everyone talking about something totally off subject and kill this nice little thread we had going. PS: I explained the HELLO post, it was just another way of keeping this on the first page until someone responded. Kinda like ttt.

Re: Going Hybrid!

I think you will have to stretch the front clip and move your rear back some. Don't forget that you will be trimming out the fenders for some decent sized tires, so perhaps you could do all of the trimming on the forward edge of the rear fenders. I can't see how you would easily move the drivetrain forward. This is why I suggested starting with a shortened Suburban frame for more flexibility in body placement and wheelbase. I guess you could also lengthen the Blazer frame. That would be a lot of work also.

Re: Going Hybrid!

I was thinking of moving the crossmembers forward and buiilding new driveshafts. Not easy but nothing ever is.

Re: Going Hybrid!

you're thinking is also flawed due to the fact that you dont have much more frame rail past the stock hangers as it is, so its going to be hard moving everythign forward.

Re: Going Hybrid!

I'm not the first one to do this. I'm not moving the front axel forward just the engine/tranny/transfer case. Yes it will put a steeper angle on the front driveshaft but that can be dealt with. Other than that I have to get the rear drive shaft retubed and stretched 4" and rerun my exhaust. Both of which I had planned to do anyway. I have talked to aleast one other person that has done this and is very happy with the result. He is a member of S10Extremist and many of you may have seen his truck in that little magazine 4wheelparts sends out every month. So this is very possible and I believe the best option. /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

Re: Going Hybrid!

The guy referenced earlier (S-10 Blazer on 1st gen K5 chassis) has 33x12.50 tires on 15x8 Chevy rally wheels with about a 3" wide flexible rubber fender flare........I personally think it looks pretty good (not out of proportion or anything) with the tires only sticking out a couple of inches on both sides. He did try mounting aftermarket 10" rims which also had a little more backspacing and it looked a little goofy.

Couple other comments:

Besides the small cap HEI, he also used an aluminum radiator and electric fan to keep the stock front grille setup. The stock S-10 inner fenders were also removed and replaced with some custom ones.

A body lift on an S-10 will give more room for a V-8 conversion.

Re: Going Hybrid!

I havent seen to many other s-10 hybrid guys try it, but Im gonna try to do some extensive body mods. Most people seem to mount the body on "where it'll fit"... which usually results in it being mounted a little to high and far back (for my liking). I'm thinking the combination of a large HMMWV-style tranny hump, boatsiding, white-knight style front fenders, and maybe a few other "adjustments" for tire clearance and I will be able to mount the body low/forward like I want.

Jason, this is usually because of the rear floor design of the S Blazer. The back seat is built into the floor and doesn't work at all with the K5 frame. I cut out the floor, lowered the body, and replaced with a new, flatter floor with room for a seat and a storage box in the floor.

who has done it successfully? you're backwards engineering, why make an already bad situation worse? /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif

Re: Going Hybrid!

Ok, I have been skimming the post and just wanted to add my two cents and a couple picts. One of my buddies ran a s-10 blazer body swap on a fullsize frame (after much shortening) and another is running a truck body on a later blazer frame. Both were trail only rigs and looked cool, but were far from legal with tires that stuck all the way out past the wells. The one I'll include a pict of ended up setting the cab back to make space for the motor which ended up leaving the radiator sicking out past the front. Like I said, though, they were trail only rigs.

Re: Going Hybrid!

I am assuming it has to do with my limited priveledges on this site, but just a quick question, how do you post picts here? I was never given the option to link a picture with this post. joshua632, If your interesed in seeing the one rig I have picts of, drop you e-mail address and I will send you the picts.

oh ok.... but what is the s10-cab-only guys excuse? lol! Im just using a reg cab s-10 cab + fenders (well, a little of them) and the hood.. thats it.

Can't explain that one! Poor fabrication, I would guess. /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Edit: the farme on a K5 rises quickly behind the "front seat" area, and you would have to modify the floor of the pickup cab as well to clear it, or mount the cab high on the frame. That is why I think a 73-77 frame is a better choice, and a Sub frame best.

Re: Going Hybrid!

Here is a copy of an email I recently recieved from a guy named Ben Duncan who has done this exact swap and is very happy with his swap. I also have a picture of a truck similar to his that I will email to anyone willing to post it here. Also my email address is [email protected] if anyone wants to email me any photos or comments.

Hey Mark & Joshua, I just picked up your e-mail with question about my truck.

I slid the motor to the front 4" and had to notch out the front crossmember for clearance on the crank shaft pulley. I tried to keep the body as low as I could on the frame.  On the rear tires (39 1/2 ") it works out perfectly but on the front I had to move the axle forward 2" where the tires were hitting the rear of the fenders.   Also had to cut the front fenders for tire clearance there.  Ordered a long spline 40 degree front shaft and it works fine.

Re: Going Hybrid!

yeah, I have no probs modifying the s-10 cab sheetmetal to get around the K5s frame. Its gonna be hella customized anyway. lol!! I think I will be ok on front tire clearance. Thanks to the 52" spring swap, my front axle will be 3" further forward than stock, that oughta help a lot. Man, I can't wait to start on this project.... just have to wait for kenny to deliver that cab... /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

you know, me thinks there should be a hybrid forum... there are lots of issues that could be discussed there that really have no relevance in the 1st/2nd gen forums or even the garage. Seems like a lot of people are building them these days. It'd rock if we could have sticky build-up threads like they do over on pirate so we can follow along as other people go s-ton. How about it Steve? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I second that, I think a Hybrid Forum would be great that way post like this don't get lost in all the other stuff going on in the garage. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think we could probably get away with this in the Center of Gravity. The Mod is pretty tough over there, though. /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif
