Going sm465

When I'm just cruisin in my K5 I shift the 465 around 3600-4000 rpm with the tbi 350. Only when I'm romping on it will I take it to 6000rpm. (I have spare motors). For local I found that I got better MPG than my 700r4 did, and I like it on the long trips too. I've taken the truck on the same 3 hr ride with the 465 as I did with the 700r4 and the mpg was not the same, but not enough of a difference for me to want a OD.

As everyone said, they are cheap, go forever, and easy to swap. I'm running 465's in 3 trucks right now, 2 of them came with 700r4's. I'm buying to more 465's tomorrow since I can't keep a spare, my friends keep buying them off me to swap out their auto's. Needless to say I like them.

I do also run a 4500, great tranny, but the ratio's don't impress me. We bought the dump new in '98 (behind a 454ci) and now it's hard to shift into 2nd and 4th. Now we have a '86 dump with a 465 that went through more abuse, and never had a problem shifting yet (200,000 miles) that trucks clutch went out twice and I had to power shift it home load both times.

I think the diesel had different gearing in the axles to make up for the lack of high rpm's. I think the 465 is a wonderful tranny and aside from lack of overdrive, it is IMHO the best choice for truck use because of stoutness, low maintenace, low cost and wide variation to suit just about any setup. If you have the 465, throw it in there and be pleasantly surprised that the only thing you would swap it for is a 4500:D

The 6.2 trucks had the same range of gearing choices as the gas versions did. As already mentioned the 6.2 will go to 3,600 rpm and not like a lot of the older truck gas engines were good for much higher than that anyway.

The 6.2 diesel has a narrow power range 600 - 2500(?) rpm. A gas V8 600 - 5000rpm. Would a SM465 be the best choise in this application? The SM465 is a wide range ratio, Would a NV4500 with its closer ratio and OD be a better overall choise for a diesel?
Just something to think about.

The NV4500 is a wide ratio trans too, its gears are pretty similar other than the OD.

GM did put 465's behind diesels, they work just fine.

Even the TBI's were limited. I know my 90 is only good till about 4200 and the 88 will run up to 4500, but starts to stumble at 4000.
