Going to go look at this '75 this weekend. Any advice?

Been working with this guy on Craigslist for a couple of months on this '75. It looks like it's in pretty good shape. He says mechanically it's in great shape. The rockers are probably toast. He says the floor pans are surface rust. He removed all of the trim getting ready to get it painted so all of the trim is included. He is selling it for $1500. Anything I should look out for? It's been about 35 years since I've owned a full vert '73-'75.

Runs and drives, 1500 sure. I'd offer like 1000 and try and meet in around 1250.
Worth a try anyways. What are your plans for it.

Its going to need some rear qtr panel, rocker and fwd cab support work for sure. Its going to be worse than it looks in the pics. The firewall to cowl is showing rust at the seam in the engine compartment.

Look under the floor at the rocker boxes and cab supports. If the doors drop when opened and are hard to close it could have rocker box structural issues and that can be a lot of work depending on what you wan't to do with it.

Looks like it's intact interior wise. Its' got the roll bar.
What about the Top?

Wow. An Oregonian 75 that has less rust than my NM 84. And a price you can't refuse. Other than Known Issues, if i may suggest to make sure all electrical items work properly, and the speedo reads right? IMHO the price is great as long as there is no major mechanical issues. (Side-story: Over the holidays a guy down here had a Blazer on CL- 350cid, automatic (boo), NP 205, 3/4ton axles, half doors and full doors, $1,100. Don't think that ad lasted 30 seconds)

Stripping for paint seems a bit premature. It's gonna need some metal first. Rockers, obviously, but floor pans also. There are holes under pass seat. It's always worse than it looks. If you're setup for that stuff, it seems worth it to me. It's not all that hard if you have the skills/tools.

BTW, I dig the green.

x2!

...or if you even give a damn.

One thing I noticed...it has 15 x 7 inch rally wheels on it.
I`ve only seen one other set like that ,my buddy had some.

The truck looks not too bad for a 75 at least its all there.

Thanks a lot guys. Yeah unfortunately I don't have body working skills. I can do the mechanical stuff but I'd have to farm out the body work. I know that can be pretty expensive. It's the body work that scares me on any rig this old. That's mainly because I don't know it. Thanks for the tip about opening the doors. I'll check out the engine bay seam too. And yeah, he said that he was going to get the rust work done then a full repaint, thus the trim removal. As you can tell, it's been repainted once before. That front fender isn't rust, it's bad prep for the previous paint job I think.

This would be a project. I've always wanted another '75 since the first one I had, which was my first K5, back when I was 16. That one got totaled just a few months after I got it by someone running a stop sign. I'd like to keep it fairly stock. It wouldn't be a wheeler, just a drive around have fun truck. Take the top off in the summers.

As far as the top goes, I haven't seen pics of it but he says it's all there. I'll know more on Sunday when I go look at it. Interesting catch on the 15x7s. I thought they all came with 15x8s.

Best of luck to ya! If you're not going to wheel it, but just keep it the way it is, maybe restore it (the faux wood paneling is just charming, gotta say) then i guess rust would be an issue. It's a great price, the engine looks okay and "new", and it has waaaay less rust than my '84.

I learned a bit from this thread. I also thank you, guys!

Like others have said, the rust will be worse than it looks. My CUCV looked kind a like that in pics and after some wire wheeling I could put my foot through the floor under the pedals. If I had it to do over, I'd have paid 1-2 K$ more to not have body problems. It all depends how much you care, how much money you have and how hard it is to find those old full verts in any condition. My personal experience is that body shop guys don't want to mess with rust either, so it may be a pain to find someplace to farm it out for reasonable money.

Yeah I decided not to pursue it. I have a nice 1990 right now that needs a little TLC (power steering pump, u-joints, transfer case weep). I'd rather spend the money on that one with no rust and a very well running TBI motor. When he posts his Craigslist ad up I'll put up a link in case anyone else is interested in the '75.

Thanks everyone for the advice on what to check though. The paying more money to not have to worry about body issues seems like good advice as well.

looks like a great truck for a restoration to me...looks like it has most of its original parts all over it.

$1500 for the truck, and if you don't want to or can't do the work yourself, you can probably find some shop willing to do it over the course of a year for maybe $10,000

anyway, it is a great candidate for somebody

Yeah Craig's was a rare find indeed. It was pretty much in mint condition. If I remember right Craig's was a '73 single tone. I think he did the plasti-dip white to make it two tone. That way he could always just pull the white off and go back to the original color. Of course, Craig paid quite a bit more than $1500 too. In the long run though he's way ahead.
