Its an m1008 with no padding, just bare paint and metal and the paint is begining to chip. Do i need to worry about anything else or can i just clean the area good and rattlecan over the area? I knew id probably have to continue touch ups with just the bare paint exposed to my gritty feet, thanks

If you are not going to put in a floor mat, consider something a little better than rattle can. There is some stuff called Hammerite that comes in spray cans that is really tough. But, if its going to stay metal, I've got another idea.
Check out the local spray bedliner places. Find out when they are going to be spraying a truck with Rhinoliner, or something like that, and give them a couple of bucks to hit the floorboard with one shot.
You would never wear through that.

Thanks, im going to get the truck undercoated at a place that does rhino and ill ask about that, otherwise i think ill buy some cheap rubber floormats, should work fine and i can pick em up when it gets wet so it dosnt rust

why not just get some brush-on bedliner and DIY. wont have to worry about touch ups, etc. I had my interior Line Xd turned out great. I still use a floor mat so I dont wear a spot in my floor (line x)

The military had a procedure where they hit it with some sort of "rust resistant" primer and then sprayed on non skid paint thick and heavy. That's what mine has. However since Alfa put a pad and vinyl mat in I have some surface rust to deal with. I'm going to use some Rust Bullet or Chassis Saver or something and cover the floor well. Did that on my Tracker this last fall and it's holding up well. I'll top coat it with something and probably leave the mat on there for now. Would like to Rhino Liner or Line-X the floor eventually so it's permanent.

interesting, i just hit it quick with no primer or anything, metal was being exposed and wasnt rusting yet. Ill leave it for the body shop to do it then ill go with some sort of liner like you guys said, man ill be dumping so much money into this. haha. Any idea what kinda rust resistant primer they used? it seems to work really well. Military trucks seem to rust less than their civy counterparts

Military trucks get used less, have people in them less, usually see less road salt, and have the vinyl mats or heavy paint instead of carpet and matting. It's the use the government gave them compared to their civilian counterparts.

The mill spec TB 43-0213 for rustprofing them says
(6) Floormat.

(a) After removing floormat, discard padding and apply nonslip flight deck compound (NSN 5610-00-782-5556 l-gal. kit).
(b) Install rubber mat without padding.

You can get rattle-can bedliner. My brother bought it for something non-auto-related. The texture and quality seemed pretty good--very consistent.

All you'd have to do is mask it off with some painters tape and then hit it once or twice with the canned stuff. :thumb:

metrodps, you usually find them missing the mat entirely. The mat also retains water and crap so often they just got tossed. Not to mention as rough as the nonskid usually is I'd bet it sits there and wears at the bottom of the mats over time.

:doah:
no really!

I only posted the info for the non slip nsn it is in the TB 43-0213 for rustproofing them. I was only pointing out what they used. Every one I have seen that has been restored or an ALFA abortion has the mat. Me I care either way. Just an fyi on what the TB says on it. ;)
