gonna start shaving my 14 bolt tomm..

The Sawzall sucks. get a hand grinder and few wheels and go to town. It was not that bad with my mikita. It was to thick with for the sawzall to do justice.

I don't see how a sawzall would work at all

You would burn up like 30 blades anyways

exactly and it would take all day to get anywhere. The little mikita worked great. I did it in small sections and cut angled slices off piece by piece till I got somewhere.

ive heard of ppl having success with sawzalls thats why i said it, i however used a portaband, and although its cumbersome to use it cut through the lip like butter

Another knowledgable post from the guy whos awesome at everything...

A GOOD sawzall, with a good blade will cut through it no problem. That being said I used a grinder/ with a cut off wheel. That also worked fine. My buddy did his with a sawzall and smoothed it out with a grinder. Either way works, takes about the same amount of time and both get the job done:wink1:

Can you use the cuttin torch to knock off the majority then grind it down where you want it?

Balzer

Probably, you just have to be careful with the hot wrench, Don't take too much.

Make sure and grind down the cover too. If you dont you will end up like me learning the hard way, I have to go reseal the rear diff cover today.:D I seemed to have ground it open last time out on the rocks.

I was just curious, I dont know if it makes the houseing brittle or not. That would suck to hit the first rock and have it shatter like a ming vause. But if its safe thats the route ill use. Id like to hear some others chime in though just to get that all important second oppinion.

Whatever Timmay.

Sawsall and a grinder worked great for me, I used 2 or 3 blades. Then hit it with the grinder to clean it up. Its easy with quality tools and a little common sense.

I just used a grinder, but I just smoothed the lip on mine without removing too much.

You dont really have to go crazy... Its more about being smooth on bottom, so this isnt a bad approach...:D

I used a sawzall and cut off three pieces, then used a grinder

Then ground smooth

Whatever Vern.

3 cuts with sawzall, side, side, bottom. Then blend with a grinder as desired. Easier than grinding for 2 hours.

That's how Steve Watson did it in Petersons a few years back. I think there used to be a write up on it somewhere also.

Let the saw blade cut. Don't try to push it through the metal, you'll melt the blade.

I believe in smoothing them more then removing a lot of material. mostly because I'm lazy and have big enough tires to not worry about a 1" lip.

You could always just drink a beer and say F it. even if you grind it down its gonna hit something eventually. Put your time into moving the shock mounts up. that will give you at least 2" of clearance under the tubes.

You sure know your stuff:screwy: ...........

I used 1 search and rescue blade and cut off 3 chunks like the pics above
and then ground it all smooth with a 4 inch grinder. I bought a Ruff Stuff diff cover and didnt have to shave it at all--it was already perfect!:D

Yeah I'm not really familiar with 14bolts I thought it was different. Oh well I was wrong

It appears someone did agree with me though :wink1:
