GOOD full convertable conversion question

I've read enough to get the idea of what's needed, but here's the twist.

I'm thinking of going full vert on my '85. I don't want to ever put a hard top back on, therefore I don't really need all the factory "donor" parts. However, I would like to put a soft top on. If I'm going soft top forever, I'd love to go full vert.

The process would be difficult for me since I don't weld and don't know anyone that could help. Sooooo, I'd have to pay someone to do all the "reattaching". Don't want to, too expensive, don't care enough to.

I just want to cut it all out, nicely and finished, not ugly. Cut the doors and bedrails, and finish nicely. When I say finish nicely, I mean grind down the edges and get someone to weld patches in, roll on some Rustolieum and be done. Then install a soft top.

Is this do-able and still have a good fit?

If you're willing to have a custom top made, you can do whatever you want on the conversion...

Are you planning to do a full soft top with windows and sides, or just some basic overhead rain/sun protection?

was looking to use a simple "off the shelf" soft top, like from ORD etc
if I don't go full convertible, I'll run some canvas across the top of the cage in back. Then I'll have to contemplate payin for a soft top.

Totally doable if you dont' weld. Fiberglass is wonderful

Will take some time and some planning.

First piece of advice when you cut the roof. Make sure you cut a little long.

You may need to so some metal work though, you lose alot of structural rigidity when you cut the roof (even the small k5 roof) off. All full vert blazers had rocker boxes under the rockers and small braces in the doors. If you have a cage that would suffice.

I like the idea of a full convertible. I also like the idea of more head room when it comes to having a cage, which is another reason I want the roof gone. So the cage will hold the body together. I can find 73-75 door fairly easily, so I'll probably go that route. I'm just not looking to deal with the front window frame, basically can't. So the decision is still up in the air for me.

If you cut that roof your taking structure away so you better have a full cage. I remember when I took my top off and went out to play,man! Does that body flex! you may want to attach the window frame to it for extra support. I kept the window frames to help seal in that area.
