...or in whatever order...

My '87 is at the doc's right now with an ailing rear end. I just recently bought this truck and I'm going through it as I can, and this was one of the jobs I figured I'd better farm out to a specialist.

Both diffs are full of water. ACK!!!

The rear diff has some loose teeth in the bottom of the housing, but no teeth are missing from anywhere inside. Doc thinks someone did a shadetree gear replacement, and a sloppy one at that.
I was able to look at the front brakes, and they were fine, even feel ok when stopping. The rears hadn't gotten any attention yet, but when the mech took the drums off... he found that I was rubbing a couple metal backing plates against trashed drums. FAIL!!!
(no wonder the guy came down on the price so readily)

Since my mech couldn't seem to find a nearby rear end in 3.42, the only option seemed to be a rebuild, but he'd have to clean up the housing and thoroughly inspect it for cracks, due to the obvious abuse it's seen.
The bill, between the rear-end rebuild and the brakes, was going into four figures... for a frikkin' 10-bolt!

That wouldn't do, and a friend and I started calling salvage yards in the area. Finally, I came across a place in N. Little Rock that had one in my ratio. Like new, with all the brake hardware intact and like new (I still have to look at it, but my friend knows the guy and will vouch for him) for $350.

Whew.

I started off wondering whether I should just fall on my shifter and end it all... but I'm seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, and wondering if maybe... just maybe... the jerk who sold me the truck may yet come out on the short end.

I gave $3000 for it, knowing there was a problem with the heater coil (been there, done that), the rear window motor, a little of the normal Chevy cancer, and what I thought were merely a couple bad seals on the drivetrain. His asking price was over $4k, but he met me halfway between Little Rock and Memphis, and I think he was pretty much ready to get rid of it asap.

Do yourself a big favor and buy a 14ff with better gearing for less money (except for the new wheels that will be needed) and then either re-gear the front axle to match or find the same geared front axle in the 8 lug variety and be done with it.

Believe me, I thought of it. But not this time. Right now I need a simple bolt-on fix to get my Blazer running again. I don't do any heavy wheeling (yet) so I'm not too worried about bulletproofing the drivetrain just now.
I'll certainly look into it in the future, though. Right now I just need to get it rollin' like NOW.

The 14ff is a direct bolt in if you get it from a 3/4 ton truck. Also if you don't mind running with 6 lug up front and 8 lug out back you could always keep your currnet front axle and upgrade it at a later date. Unfortunately trying to find a 14ff with 3.42 gearing is going to be difficult.

It sure seems like alot for a junkyard 10bolt:confused:. Not sure about your area but here they are ALMOST free. I have matching 10bolts w/3.73's from a 91 blazer complete in perfect working order and cant seem to get $200 for the pair, the add keeps renewing... Got my 14bff for $150, less than half the axle your interested in and just sold one for $100.
Id keep looking if I were you:D.

Yah, I know. If/when I decide to upgrade, I'm sure I won't be able to get much for it.
But, the axle is evidently like new, and has all the hardware with it. ...and it's the only place we've found ANYTHING with a 3.42 ratio in this area. So far, that's the only one we've found at any price that'll work without having to change out the front, too. The truck is on the mechanic's only lift right now, and I can either pay him to bolt the old crap back on, or give him something decent to install.
No pressure, right?

I'll take this hit, and I imagine I'll have a different (and more common) ratio in mind when I upgrade to something better. As it is, I've spent all my time trying to find *something* that would fit (and wouldn't have to be shipped) just to get my truck back home and out of the shop. I've also badly neglected my studies, and midterms are fast approaching.
The good side is that once I do, I can do that work myself. The only reason it's in the shop right now is that I figured it'd need some internal work. Well... that's out the window.

Well you certainly know when its necessary for you to bite the bullet. We all have to at times and I hope your foots on the pedal soon:D.

Honestly, if I'd known that a swap was in the cards, I would have left it in the driveway and started shopping for a 14 immediately. I'd have lots more time then, and it's a job I could have done myself. I just wasn't comfortable getting inside the pumpkin just yet.

Now, I'll keep my eyes open for a nice 14 (and maybe even a little something for the front) and do it up right in the garage, as I'll have all the time in the world on the 10 bolt... until I get up some guts on the trail, that is. I will check once more at the salvage yard, though, just to see if they missed a 14 somewhere.

Mo' Betta' good news!?!

My Blazer is on the road again!:D

Having found one of the rear shocks to be blown, I went ahead and supplied
the mech with the new ones I'd planned to install anyway. What a heck of a difference in my ride! Can't wait to get the front ones changed now.

As for the replacement rear end. Some of you (especially the fellas who suggested a 14... which I still think would have been best) will be glad to know that this rear was upgraded before the last owner gave up on his Blazer.
Well... that isn't ALL good news... I mean, giving up on a Blazer project... :doah:
When my mech took it apart to work on the brakes, he noticed that the axles were aftermarket, but it didn't occur to him that they were any different than stock until he tried to mount the wheels. Lug nuts were too small. These studs were 1/2" instead of 3/8".
Hmmm! I went back through my picture files to an image I got while the truck was up on the rack, and found a fresh Yukon sticker on the axle end.
Wally told me that the innards were stouter than stock, too... though I'll take his word for it at this point.

Whaddaya think, folks? Did I do good? (entirely by accident, of course)
