Just pondering the idea now, we got a bunch of snow and a couple foreign friends want to try skiing for the first time. Got me thinking that a rack would sure come in handy..

I'm thinking along the lines of the new ones you see on cars and SUVs that you can clip down fairly easily

Anyone know of a kit that works good on the K5? Anyone running a rack for skis? Show me what u got!

Maybe one of those tow hitch style racks for easy reach and removability? I put skis in my k5 all the time on the passenger side over the wheel hump in front of the spare. I can fit 4 or 5 pairs in there at least. Shorter skis fit in the bed really easy too. I have no interior so I'm not concerned about having them inside with snow and sharp edges.

This might be a little far on the ski-geek side of things, but after going to some skate-ski tuning clinics (I snowboard too), it took about .2 seconds to convince me that if at all possible, keep your bases inside if you can.

There is so much crap flying around and hammering/contaminating your precious wax job. Sand, mag-chloride, etc. Beyond carrying convenience, that's why you might see gear bagged on racks.

Haha as long as my ptex patches stay in and my edges are still attatched I'm happy. My skis would be alot safer on my roof than on my feet.

I was thinking of making a base rack type deal myself, then bolting board holders (don't know what else to call them) on one side and a cargo box on the other....

i've had a thule rack on my blazer for years. the front legs clamp to the rain gutters over the front windows. on the rear i had to drill a couple holes through the roof to bolt on two metal plates that have a lip like the gutters for the legs to grab on to. the rack comes off by unscrewing a knob on each leg. it's good so you don't have stuff sticking up if you go into the woods where a branch can grab it or need to go through a car wash or parking garage. the knobs also have built in locks so they can't be unscrewed from the roof.

the cross bars are vinyl coated rectangular tube and are pretty strong. i've had 12 pressure treated 4x6 landscapers R.R. ties up there w/out a problem. once the basic rack is on, thule makes a bunch of different brackets and adaptors to mount skis, boards, kayaks etc. i primarily use mine to haul my canoe.

man, just looked at some yakima and thule stuff online. Spendy! I'd really like a cargo box for the roof tho. Once i pack the wife, kiddo and 2 dogs in, space gets small fast.

I just removed the factory roof rack from the top. Turns out that's all I needed to do to fit my K5 in my garage without deflating tires. I could probably take it apart and put it in a box for shipping if you wanted it.

You can kinda see it on the top here. I'll see if I can find a better pic.

Here's another shot from when I first got the truck.

Yakima rack worked good for me. I did have this same setup on the Blazer and it was a little tigher for sure.....but worked pretty decent.

(sorry Brian for posting the same pic in two different threads!) :haha:I will say though, nice transformation from your original truck to now.....dang!

As soon as I get my new equinox company car I plan on getting the huge Thule box. My wife and I should be able to fit our boards and skis with room for maybe one more board. Keeping them on the roof but out of the elements is nice for long trips. Only time those racks are nice for is to throw the snowy boards and skis up there on a short drive to a cabin.
