I just got a K5 and am in the process of tracking all of the mechanical issues....ugh.....have a junk rochester, the rear end is slamming when I accelerate, and everything leaks, which are all things to be expected when taking on an older vehicle. Not sure where to start with all of the above projects and was hoping for some tips on beginning my project.....so excited!

My opinion:

Step 1: pay for membership. Believe me, it's $ well-spent.

Get the engine running reliably first (easier said than done). Usual tune-up stuff and then address the carb. Either rebuild or replace. But essentially, without an engine, it's all for naught.

Then move on to the suspension. I say this b/c some suspension issues can cause poor road performances and can be mistaken for bad wheels/tires/u-joints etc. Inspect all bushings, steering components, U-bolts etc.

Brakes next...safety third

Then seek out drivetrain issues.

Sounds like you've got a long road ahead, but you've come to the right place.
