I spent the weekend getting the engine back in my blazer. I pulled it because my oil pan was leaking and needed to do a few other things to the engine. This was also a good time to put in the diy 4x4 engine crossmember.

The first question has to do with the cross member. How did you guys get the engine in and lined up with the bell housing and over the mount at the same time? I think I did it wrong bu I had the crossmember all bolted together, mounted the plates on the engine and tried to slide it over. That didnt work so I took the plates off the engine and got the engine in position. Then I had a hell of a time bolting the plates back up. The only other way it looks like you can do it is to bolt the cross member to the engine then set the engine and bolt the cross memeber to the plates the go on the frame... Hey I dont know alls I know is it was a pain to get the engine in.

Second question, I have been fighting a power steering issue since I put the truck together. I have cross over steering and I have been too cheap to put hydraulic assist on it. Anyway I have gone through so many pumps it is rediculous. The last one I put on was an AGR pump and it seemed to be doing great. When I was mounting the pump yesterday, I put the pulley on and I noticed that the shaft had some in and out play as well as up and down. I am afraid this one is getting ready to take a dump. Any one else have steering issues like this when going to crossover? I guess I am going to bite the bullet and put hydro assist on.....

Thanks in advance

I don't have any trouble like that with crossover, but if you have giant tires or a locker in the front, I might suspect that those are hard on the pump. Also, your steering gear fluid could be contaminated in the steerig gear box so flushing that out and filtering it might help.

I'll answer what I can here. I had a similar problem when putting mine in. I had the tranny bolted up to the BBC and was putting them back in the truck together. I couldn't clear the mounts without the engine hitting the firewall.

Loosen up all the bolts on the crossmember a bit...a little slop goes a long way with lining things up. To get the engine over the mounts, I actually had to remove the engine mount brackets from the block, set them on the bushings, and then drop the engine on top of them. Then bolt the brackets back up to the block. Then tighten everything down.

that sounds like the same thing I did, I guess I did not have it loose enough to make it easier, thanks for the help. It does seem to stiffen things up. I have not fired the engine but i did crank it some and you can really notice the difference, I can feel it in the body. I have a feeling that you will really feel the engine vibrations.
