I'm working on an '89 Ford Super Duty. It's a brush truck for our Fire Dept.

The truck has a 460 with the ZF 5 speed standard.

The clutch went out on it. I replaced the clutch disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, slave cylinder, clutch master cylinder, and the hose connecting the two. I bled it like crazy and get good fluid when I do. However I still get hardly any pedal. It drives ok but the gears grind due to a low pedal. I need to get this fixed ASAP as it is a fire truck. Anybody got any advice?

I always bleed mine like this....works every time.

Loosen the bleeder on the slave and put a small tube over the end. The other end of the tube goes into a full bottle of fluid.

Take the top off the res and use a vacuum bleeder to pull the fluid up through the slave, line and master. In order for this to work easily I will fill the res about halfway and seat the end of the vacuum bledder tube to the hole in the bottom of the res.

Let the vacuum bleeder do its thing then close the bleeder on the slave.

Done. Takes about 15 minutes.

On the Furd external slaves it's easier to unbolt the slave and push the rod in and out about a dozen times. Make sure you bottom the piston all the way to push all of the air back up into the master cylinder. It may take a couple of tries to get it back up to 100% but it will work.

Is there an adjuster on the clutch linkage?

If you're 100% sure that the system is bled it could just need adjustment.

The clutch is full hydro, no adjusters. So yall think it pretty much has to be air in the system? I'm beginning to think the same thing. It just sucks because I've bled this damn thing 4 times now. I'm getting kind of frustrated with it.

Most hydraulic clutches still have an adjustment, usually between the pedal and the pushrod into the master cylinder.

Ford clutches do not have an adjustment. If it doesn't work it needs to be bled some more.:(
