so what do I need to look out for?

As always, thanks in advance.

its a pretty simple kit. side to side wobble from the turbo vane is the big killer. the turbo is really only thing that can go bad. once its installed there's not a lot of extra room in there afterwards. The turbo sits low on the drivers side right above the frame. If you have an after market set of tube shock towers that come off the top of the frame beware, they could/will be in the way. The exhaust is a pretzel and the drivers side goes down and across the front under the pulleys. You can loose the banks air box and make your own if you want. I would definitely loose the banks muffler. Its HUGE and weighs a ton. I put a Thrush on mine and its sounded/flowed way better. make sure you get the EGT gauge..you live and die by that. I wanna say 1100 degrees is the EGT ceiling...it will turn a stock 6.2 into a mildly built 350 with lots of bottom end..if you need a comparision

Make sure all the turbo oil supply and drain stuff is there, as well as the Crankcase vent stuff .

Ditch the muffler all together, its not that loud

Well, I've been doing my homework. I see no way for a 6.2 to haul a 25 foot travel trailer without being the slowest vehicle on the road.

I need a plan B...

Not sure of your sources , but I tow all the time with turboed 6.2/6.5 . 35ft 5th wheel, 28ft enclosed snowmachine trailer, 30ft triple axle tag trailer with Rockwelled suburban full of gear , bobcat trailer with a t300 bobcat the list goes on. Is it as fast a newer cummins ? No its not but its not the slowest rig on the road by a long shot . I have no issues maintaing highway speeds .

Haven't driven a 6.2TD, but I have towed with a 6.5TD. No complaints here, it's not the slowest thing on the road. Not by a long shot.

Even my N/A 6.2 Suburban wasn't too shabby hauling my K5 down the highway. Gearing & turbine make a large difference.

There are ways, it's not a hopeless situation. And the Banks kit is a good starting point.

Hmmm...lateral shaft play is actually normal for a turbo. Once the bearings pressurize with oil the slop is taken out. Spec on a Banks is between .010"-.018" side-to-side play. Basically as long as there's no housing contact you're good.

Fore-to-aft play is actually the critical one - somewhere around .003" max. If you can feel it, it's too much.

We're planning a trip in the mountains of NC in late summer, I was just wanting enough power to not be a road hazard. I'm willing to give it a go. We won't be in any hurry, just don't want to be a road hazard.

Thanks for the input. I'm meeting the guy Saturday about the turbo. He wants $1200, but I see Summit has a new kit (21002) for $1950. I may go that route. It's hard to put that kind of $$ in my old trucks...but I still love 'em...

And, a nearby salvage yard selling like new Hummer 6.5 turboed engine, trans (4l80e) and transfer case for $2650. I'll see if I can get just the tranny.

These are supposedly "ready reserve" vehicles that have never been overseas. Some have never been used at all...supposedly. A turbo and a 4l80 will bring my 'burb to life!

I would jump on a Hummer 4L80e with controller. Just be aware that it'll have more parasitic power loss than a 700r4.

Yeah. It has a th400 in it already, so I'm use to that. Plus, I would have much more peace of mind with the 4l80 for towing. Might even try overdrive on the flat portions...

That's what I was trying to say...but I was holding the turbo the other way when I typed it :)

I would jump on that humv setup. You'd be hard pressed to loose on that

Went & looked at it. The guy with the truck (Suburban! liked him already) just got it from his bud. It has a diesel, but he doesn't want it.

Got everything EXCEPT the oil drain plate that goes behind the mechanical lift pump. I'm sure I can fab something up...

The truck has 158k miles, he said it was over 100k when he helped install it. I am happy wid it

Lemme know how you fab up that oil drain. I don't think I've seen anyone try to keep the mechanical pump when adding a turbine drain in that spot.

I retained the mechanical pump when I installed the Banks on my pickup truck...it worked fine until that first pump failed. After that I put an oil return nipple on a block-off plate and have been running an electric pump ever since. Side benefit: super-easy priming of the fuel system now.

So where did you attach the oil drain? Drill a hole into the pump housing?

Banks supplies a custom pump plate with a return nipple on it. It is not in the parts diagram in the manual, but the kit has it...it's that little guy that the blue arrow is pointing toward.
