I just picked up a 95 S10 2wd 4banger 5spd. I bought it for gas milage but my only stipulation is that the thing has no balls at all! What can I do without putting a lot of money into it to at least make it get out of its own way?

Yeah, the s10 I had was the same, way, but a 1996. Glad I got rid of it, though, before it needed any other work.

You could put a V6 in it! Maybe you could take pieces off until it's light enough to get faster.:dunno:

Dont use 5th gear...

Id do a normal Tune up, plugs, 02 sensors, fuel filter. If nothing else it should help your mileage a little bit. I drove a 2.8, 5 speed in highschool for a couple years. It never did get out of its own way. It had 205/75R14s on it well in the winter I threw 235 snows on the back. Yep from November through march I never touched 5th gear.

Although when my muffler fell off and I just had a cat it really sounded fast. One buddy asked me if I finally put a 350 in it like I had wanted.

Well 5th gear is where I get my economy from...

I am going to do a tune up with a fuel filter, oil change, plugs, and I need to change a few fuel lines the a PO fubarded up.

Is it that bad? I'm looking at them right now and trying to decide if the extra power of a v6 is worth the 5 or so mpg it will cost me.

Eventually I want it to be home to a V8. I just want a cheap pickup for now. My car gets 20mpg. From what I read the V6 still gets better than that.

Thats only if you drive like a little old lady will you realistically get better than 20. My roomate has a S10 Blazer ZR2 and he can't get more than 21mpg. Then again if you get the 2wd S10 pickup with a standard I think it would do better than that.

I was searching around on s10forum and looks like I could maybe pull low 20s. My daily commute is 16 miles round trip about 50/50 city and highway. I dont ever get over 65mph unless I leave the Keys.

I am definitely getting a 2wd so that should help a little.

I've been commuting in a 2wd '89 S10 single cab short bed w/ a 4.3L and 700r4. I run 110mi/day up and down hills on almost all freeway. With the back half of the bed covered and keeping it under 80mph, I get 23mpg. I was getting 20mpg with speeds up to 100mph, but I got 2 tickets in the last 6 mo anyway, so slowing down helped more than just mileage. Also, mine has the 3.42 gears, I think most have 3.08.
