just bought a std bore 400 2bm today for $200. i plan on having it rebuilt with a good rottating asembly. COMP cams 4x4 cam kit, and Vortec heads. i cant wait to feel the difference from my tired stock 350 CA smog EGR motor, to my new built CA smog EGR motor:haha:

Has anyone put a 400 in a 80's CA EGR blazer

i never have, but a guy i no did and he had about 400hp(more heat), it took a decent amount to keep it cool, 4 core radiator, added an electric fan along with the standard fan on a clutch. around town he said it was fine, just on the trails crawling around he hit the electric fan switch for a little more cooling...if u get a completely clean engine (no carbon) it shouldnt be to hard to pass.even though i live in CT,which they arent to harsh about emissions, my friend got a new crate 350, no cats, stock exhaust, 670 holley carb, passed easy. hope this helps? or maybe i just rambled on:doah:

Have the shop that's going to build it mag the block in the lifter valley area, most 400's crack in this area badly. Also you'll need to drill the steam holes in the vortec heads if that's what you're going to use otherwise it's an instant overheat issue.

Also with Vortec heads there no exhaust crossover for a EGR. You will have to buy an EGR kit, drill and weld a bung into the exhaust pipe/headers and plumb in a EGR valve if you need to pass smog.
A set of world Torquer 2 heads would be easier bolt on than vortecs. You would be able to keep the stock manifold and all smog stuff in the right location.

Is this one of the computerized carb trucks? If so, you've got some work ahead of you to get it right.

ya i know i've been looking into 400's for a while and i think you can order the heads with the steam holes in them. and the shop i go to always mags everything. but thanks for the heads up

why would i have to drill the exhaust manifolds they are already set up. GM performance makes an EGR manifold for the vortec heads. and im going to use 50 state leagle headers.

like what and why??? i'd rather know now then later. its an 84 federal truck, not a California truck

Ahh ok, then you should be fine.

CA trucks can have the computer controlled carb (CCC) setups, which are similar to TBI, except harder to tune for larger engines.

No CCC, good to go. :)

As to the EGR, there is no exhaust crossover in the Vortec heads. (older heads use the crossover to heat the choke, and it was a handy way to get EGR) You HAVE to get EGR from the exhaust pipe/headers. There is a seperate pipe for this setup that links the manifold to the exhaust.
