Like Dave said they should be stamped with some numbers. Otherwise, if you can see at least one tooth at a time just mark it and start rotating. I've never done it on a 10 bolt only a 14 bolt so I might just be telling you something totally wrong, but try it anyways.
OK guys, I'm gonna sound like and idiot here so tell me if I'm right.
I counted the big, unmistakable one and it had 40 teeth. I think I was trying to count the wrong thing, and that is why I could not get my count. then in the very back of the axle there is another gear there, and that one had 13 teeth on it.
I dried it off and used a sharpie to make my starting point, and when I calculate it out I come out with a whopping 3.08 gear ratio! man does that bite or what??? (I think a gear change is coming REAL soon.
actually I didn't see the posts to look for the stamping until I came back in, and I'm NOT gonna go back out tonight to look!
(I'm too lazy). I still have the diff cover off because I need to get a wire wheel to clean the old crappy gasket off so I'll get the number in the morning.
it has chrome covers on it which is cool looking, but I'd rather have a normal cover. that thing grim posted about the different kinds of metals just makes too much sense.
