Got my spool installed :) ***UPDATE***

Re: Got my spool installed :)

From the looks of the part on OEM's website, that is just a mini spool. Did you have to re-use the stock carrier? I welded my spider gears and it looks just like the part they list for $200 although it only cost me a couple dollars worth of welding wire and about 2 hours. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Is this the spool you bought?

The Detroit for the 14 FF is the same size...

Re: Got my spool installed :)

I know the detroit is the same size and the mini-spool and the detroit both replace the spiders in the stock carrier. I thought he had found a full spool for $200 like this one... linky

Re: Got my spool installed :)

Kyle89K5 Have you had it off road yet and if so did you take it through mud, sand, rocks or trail yet . If so how did it do?

Re: Got my spool installed :)

Yep guys, it's mini spool, not a full spool. I havne't heard of anyone breaking a 14 bolt carrier, so I'm not worried. If I do break the carrier, I've got another sitting in the shop. The mini-spool is lifetime warrenty, you break it, he sends you a new one, no questions.

I haven't had it offroad yet, I've only drove it a couple of times so far. I can't imagine it being any worse that my gov-loc was offroad though... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Got my spool installed :)

is that spool only available for the open carrier or the Gov-Loc one as well? I am tired of having to get a little wheel spin before the Gov-Loc kicks in.

Re: Got my spool installed :)

***UPDATE***

Okay, I've been driving this thing for a while now and it's still kicking /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The tires aren't falling off yet due to wear, and I've only had one police officer give me grief and *spinning my tires* The traction is SICK. I'm going places I never imagined, AND I DIDN'T HAVE A FRONT DRIVESHAFT /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif Seriously, the traction over the gov loc is unbelieveable. My turning radius is down on pavement, and that blows. I do alot of driving around downtown and I have to plan my turns a little more, but I can live with it. My driveway is gonna need some dozer work from pulling in and out tearing a hole in there and where I park will NEVER have grass again /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

For the last question here at the bottom, these are for an open carrier. If someone has a gov-loc carrier hanging around, PM me and we'll see if we can get it to Randy. He talked about doing a spool for a gov-loc carrier before, just needs a carrier.

Re: Got my spool installed :)

Look at the body of my truck in the numerous pictures online if you're wondering what kind of trouble a truck with lockers gets into. /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif

Re: Got my spool installed :)

Kyle, what kind of rear suspension are you running? Any chance you're using a flip of some sort?

A buddy here (K5Junkie) had a welded 14 bolt with a flip and 6" or 8" rear springs. Anyway, after welding the rear he noticed that the rear experienced a lot of body roll in turns that did not "right" itself after straightening. His was bad enough he replaced it with a Detroit and the problem went away. Since a spool and a welded rear should act the same I was wondering if you had experienced anything like that?

I'm running a 4" ORD flip with the factory springs + a 1" add-a-leaf. It does roll some, but it usually corrects itself pretty good. In the parking lot here at work I notice it listing a little after I've had to turn hard to get into a spot, but not bad. I could see with a flexier setup where it would toss it pretty hard and not let go...

Right now, the oddest thing I've got to note is the way the rear *floats* through sweeping turns. It pushes out pretty hard. First time it did I I near shat my pants (my onramp leaving work is a big sweeping SOB out over the AR river, going OVER that rail was on my mind), now that I know to look for it, I don't even notice, well, much.

I've also noticed some WICKED frame tweeking and punishment on the u-bolts, but I kinda figured on that /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Interesting... /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I was curious what to expect since I'll be using a spool in my 70. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif
