Hey all, I got some new warn hubs for my 8 lug 10 bolt. Everything went preet smooth except the retaining ring. I got the passenger side on no problem but Cant seem to get the axle shaft on the driver side out far enough to get it on. Been trying to move the axleshaft out a lil with a big screwdriver on the ujoint( Warn instructions) but no luck.

The warn instructions say that some axle wont take the rettaining ring. But the dang thing fit one side and not the other. WTF!

Thanks for any help guys

Make sure that the warn hub is not making contact with the axle nut. Also whatever you do, don't run the thing without the C clip on the axle as this is what keeps tension on the stub shaft seal so dirt and water don't get into the wheel bearings and hub.

Warn called it float(clearance between hublock body and spindle nut). It doesnt say how much there should be though. There is some movement but not alot. Sad there should be some float. So I think there is no cantact between the two do to the "float".

I think at this point you just haven't pryed hard enough on the axle to get the stub far enough out to install the snap ring.

Pry bar? Should be able to pull the stub out with a pair of pliers, needle-nose, something.

I like the needle-nose Vise-Grips for this.

and as soon as you try to push the snap ring back on, the axle slips back in. Using the pry bar prevents the axle from slipping back in.

I think the point is this, if you cannot move the axle with minimal force, there may be other problems lurking.

huh...when iput on my warn hubs i couldnt get that snap ring on either...last time i posted everyboyd said to not worry aboot it.

now im confuzed hahaha, but mines been fine for aboot 6months now...

ok took apart the hub again, took the spindle off and removes axle shaft. I looked at the othe side and the stub shaft seal is alil closer to the spindle. I looked at the stub shaft and spindle and cannot figure out what is giving me resistance.??

Do you see the stub shim i'm talking about? Once the spindle is off and you're staring at the stub shaft this shim slides onto the shaft and one side has a large bevel relief for the radius in the stub axle and if it's on backwards will cause the problem you're having.

If you can, take some pics of the various pieces and post them here and i'll show you.

Number 50 is the item i'm speaking about. If the axle has never been messed with then this piece will be made of bronze, if anyone has ever replaced it then it will be made of plastic.

well I know there is no bronze in there:D It has that shim. I never touched it but I will flip it around and see what happens

Make sure the beveled side goes against the stub axle radius.

If you can't figure this out i might have to take a drive that way for dinner tonight and stop by to help you. Is the pizza joint open tonight?

not sure, I wont be here though:( Going to the inlaws. The beveled side is against the stub.

ok so the spacer is where it is supposed to be. Im at a loss. oh well no more messing with it today, gotta head out to the inlaws

How much clearance is there supposed to be between the spindle and the stub shaft?

I'm no expert (which you can tell by the # of posts I have put up) but I had the same problem with a new 10blt I bought from a military surplus place. It was new in the crate still covered in the red storage paint and grease. It had the plastic hubs so I got the primo warns, I put the new hubs on and I couldn't get either sides snap rings on. I posted about the same question and at least 5 or 6 guys responded that they gave up on theirs and just left them off with no problems so I did the same. And I drove it for about 6 months no problems, in the paper work that came with my hubs it said that not all axles will "accept" the snap rings. And did I mention that when I pulled out the plastic hubs those rings were on there, so go figure!!!!!!!
