gotta header that didn\'t seal...

ok guys... I got this thing out of the shop today!!!

I felt like a giddy school girl acts, all day long... man I was on cloud 9 - kinda like my when I had my first kid or something!

anyway, the flange at cyl. 2 didn't seal. I'm wondering if I should replace the gasket, or even possibly double it up... the thing almost look kinda bent there, and where it didn't seal is on top. there is some really serious blow by. are there any negative aspects of doubling it up???

also, if I decided to take it off and try to straughten it how would I best go about it? (so I had the least chance of screwing it up???)

I'd try to straighten it if you can, it's hard to say just how to do that without seeing it. I'd think you'll be better off with just a single gasket, doubling up probably wouldn't last. I use Mr. Gasket Ultra-Seal's and they've treated me right as long as I remember to retorque after the first week or so.

What headers are on it? In my experience if you have an old header that is bent just replace them. Newer ones I think would hold ok to a bit of heat and banging it straight if it was bent (Pull it off to check). Also you can try soaking the header gaskets in water before you put them one... an old school trick that has sealed some leakers in the past for me.

well first I think I'll try your old school trick if I can get the gasket out cleanly without taking off the entire header... and if I gotta take it off then I'll probably work on straightening it.

I'v doubled up header manifold gaskets before with no problems. I use K&amp;W coppercoat gasket sealer between them to stick them togeather. Use a good quality gasket.
I had a old set of beat up warped headers on a truck I owned. Doubling up the header gaskets was the only way it would not blow out the gaskets and start leaking.

ok guys, I got a fix on this stuff... you're gonna love this how I fixed this!

anyway I took some premium gaskets, painted them with spray paint, and while still wet installed it with 2 gaskets (double up just in the front place where it was leaking). I didn't even unbolt the entire headers, and man it fixed it real well.

there is a guy here that has done several rebuilds that told me to use spray paint instead of the gasket crap you spray your head gaskets etc. with (except not wet like I did this one), and said he'd never had 1 leak.

we the guy is a really good mechanic, so that is how I did my heads. when capt. started talking about the water thing I was gonna do it, except when I got out there I got to thinking... so I thought why not, and it worked great!
