As unsatisfying as it was driving with 3.08 gears and 31" tires, I can't imagine doing it with 2.73 gears. I haven't had any personal experience with 3.42's, but I'm betting you'd be unhappy with anything higher (numerically lower).
I find that to be true, even on newer stuff. The girlfriend's Tahoe had 3.23's, and were just *ok*. The Yukon XL has 3.73's and is much snappier. Some of it could possibly be attributed to the larger engine, but I can feel the gears more than anything else.

I have a blazer(cucv 1009) that I put 3.42 and a real posi in... with 33's it's ok but could easily like 4.10's and still be very happy at 70 mph. My cucv 1028 is happy with 4.56's and 34's...good mpg.
