I had a 14 bolt FF rear diff. sold to a guy for $175. I pulled the cover to verify the 3.73 gear ratio, and found out it did have a Gov-Loc. The fluid that came out was mud brown in color, and I know that it acted like an open diff. when I drove it. Would it be worth keeping and swapping ring and pinion (I need 4.10's). ? or should I just sell it as-is for the $175?

In my opinion gov-locs suck ass for wheeling. Even if you had it rebuilt it probably wont last more then a year. There are a couple guys i wheel with that have them and they work great for a while but they sure dont last long.

Gov locs are great posis for the street, but they suck for 'wheeling.

I should know. I've got one.

you never hear good things about a gov-lok. I would sell as is and find another 14bolt with 4.10's, there are lots out there

so i could destroy mine with my 350 and 36"s? that sucks! can i get a locker for my carrier or do i need an open one?

My gov-loc was locking up constantly on right turns on the street. Then one day i was driving down the road and heard a pop upon take off! Well My gov-loc exploded. It shot a hole through my diff cover. We broke the rest of it apart pulled out all the clutches, cleaned up the metal debri mess. And for now I have an open diff with a small chip in my ring gear. Anyone have a 12 bolt or 14 bolt SF with 4.10s for sale?
