Gov-loc

are gov-loc better or worse than a open diff in snow? i dorve my truck in the snow and could hardly move. but i dont think my hubs were locking in on my truck. and i also had a 33 12.50 tire with a non agrssive tread so i have n idea of the gov-loc is a problem or not.

I would say the gov lock over nothing would be better. I ran one in my old 12b for years with no problems at all. Some here cringe at the mention of the govloc, and will tell you to ditch it. I'll tell you that with proper maintenance and responsible driving, it'll do you fine
 
well before the locker kicks in my one tire will almost go one full revolution. is that normal or is it just getting worn out?

thats how the gov lock works , it is a lightweight gear driven locker. i have never had a gov lock fail yet and i lean heavilly on the throttle. on my second set of gears in the last 9 months without any other failers. of course it doesnt help that the motor is to big for the drive train.:D
 
auto hubs?

I pulled the automatic hub locking mechanisms out and threw them away. I put in manual "rotate the dial" hub locks in, and have to get out and change them when I want 4wd, and when I want to turn it off, but they work all the time. I had problems with the autos either not working, not turning off, or sometimes one would come on and the other not. And stuff.

Now the only problem is that sometimes people think it's fun to change the manual hubs on me when I've parked in the lot of a shopping mall. I don't get that at all, but I've learned to check 'em from time to time.

I replaced the gov-loc with Eaton Tru-Trac (I don't do off road, and never have one wheel hanging off the edge of a cliff, so I don't need a real locking differential) and I love it.

You're lucky then. I grenaded the govlock in the 14boltFF in my old crewcab with a bigblock. never ever had a problem with the gears. Was ruening a corner one day, pinned it and KerBOOM.
 
Info from another site about the gov-lock
Gov-lock(G/L) Used by General Motors in 73 & newer trucks that came with an option locking / limited slip differential. It was used in 7.5", 7.625", 8.5", 8.6", 8.875" 12 bolt truck, 9.5", 10.5", and now in the new 11.5" differentials. The smaller designs are fairly weak and the 8.5" and 12 bolt truck designs are especially weak. The 9.5" and 10.5" 14T units are fairly strong and will hold up well to towing and moderate abuse. The Gov-Lock is designed to act as an open differential during normal driving with no force being applied to clutches. This fact that no force is applied to the clutches keeps the clutches from chattering during normal every day driving. When either wheel slips and spins approximately 100 rpm faster than the other a governor assembly senses the difference in speed and activates a ramp system. The ramp system causes the clutches to engage and transfer power to the wheel with traction. One other feature of the Gov-Lock is that it will not engage at vehicle speed above 30 mph. This no lock-up feature keeps the vehicle more stable at higher speeds where both wheels spinning could cause an inexperienced driver to spin out or slide off of the road. This is a great design in theory and works as designed in a stock vehicle that is not abused. The problem is that most of us modify our trucks and many of us abuse them. When this unit is asked to deliver under extreme conditions it tends to self-destruct. The force generated by the ramp system that is used to lock-up the clutches works well, except that same force has to be contained by the case and the case is not always up to the job.
 
I'm putting a 14bsf w/ gov loc in my truck as we speak. After looking at different options it seemed like a good, inexpensive way to upgrade from my open 12 bolt. If it goes BOOM, I'll be sure to post up.
 
Quick qestion, How does everyone find the gov lov in a rear on daily driving and turns ?
 
If working correctly, you don't know it's there.

My 14SF has (again) started staying locked after it applies, and drags the tire when turning.
 
I have a factory gov lock in my 14b SF rear, never had a problem with it yet. I've heard of them self destructing but almost alwys it's due to people mashing the gas and spinning a wheel out of control, then the ramps will engage at too high of an rpm and blow up. That's the key thing to keeping them together, they're designed to engage at low rpm so if you're spinning the wheels just go easy on the gas until it kicks in and you shouldn't have a problem.
