Ok, I know that alot of you guys don't like the Gov Lock. I have one in my DD and didn't know it until I pulled the cover. It would be nice to rebuild it if it was economical. It is in a 14bff. So before you say weld it or dump it in the garbage, can you help me with info on the rebuild such as price and where to get a kit. I haven't had any experience with the Gov locks yet but can't find any good info on the net.
TIA

dime a dozen used on ebay. just grab a used one and bolt in and go. i wouldnt waste time on reman one. i have seen them torn down. lots of crap to figure all out.

and if you need one for 4.56 -up i have a brand new n.o.s. unit in the box i would part with threw a pm offer sent to me.

That's how mine was 'rebuilt' :D

with a 14ff go detroit, i have one in my new truck and i hardly notice it, unless you go balls out around a corner its got excelent street matters, it has awesome traction off road (i use my 4x4 less) and i dont gotta worry about it blowing up.

otherwise get used until it blows up, just pray when it does you dont loose anything else

I used to work at a rear end shop. We sould scrap the Gov Loks when they came in (most of the time, they were the problem). For the cost of the rebuilt, you might want to consider a Detroit Locker, but if you want to keep the Gov Lok, replacce it with used, and save your time.

Isn't there a difference between the open and g80 carriers? Or is that only on the 10 bolt?

There is - the Gov Lok uses a 3 spider carrier, while the open uses a 4 spider carrier (the one needed for the locker).

I can't think of any reason to "rebuild" one unless it's broken.

I'd have to look at the parts manual for the 14FF, but I know the 10B or 14SF DID have rebuild parts available at one time, I'd expect the 14FF as well, but since htey aren't quite the same design/parts as the smaller diffs, no idea if they actually do.

When I was trying to get my hands on one of the tools to press the gov-lock components apart (you can't do it with common tools, believe me) the local dealer told me they got rid of all those tools, as they simply replace the entire units now, if not the entire axle assembly.

When I had mine appart to weld it, I thought it would be fun to try to reassemble it (just to see if I could do it). After about 3 hours of trying to get all the parts lined up I said f-this and started welding. I wouldn't bother rebuilding it. Like others said, wait till it pops then go to the junk yard and get another one.

As I said before I don't know much about the Gov Lock. I have had one rear wheel spinning on ice and the other did nothing. The truck was stuck (in the driveway) and it did the one leg dance. Other wheel did nothing. I assumed it was an open diff but if it is a gov lock shouldn't it have spun both tires?

Gov-lock works by locking when one tire spins and the other doesn't (differential of around 150RPM at the axleshaft) however it is also GOVerned to an upper MPH limit (GM manual states 25) at which point it unlocks. So not great when you don't care if the wheels both spin, but helps keep you out of trouble in low traction situations, like cornering, off camber roadbeds at speed, etc. Not to mention better road manners and better tire life.

But great when you are easy on the throttle and climbing a muddy hill, or trying to get a heavy load moving in bad conditions.
