I decide to get a GPS (and join the tech- heads). For those who use them what brands are decent and which ones should I avoid. I don't want to spend more than $250.

I prefer Garman GPS systems. But TomTom's are decent also. You just have to decide what is good enough for you. Personally I dont care about all the extras MP3,video,bluetooth....ect I just want a good GPS with good maps and text to speech.

I chose Garmin because I have a few different versions of GPS. Handheld, and car version. I can buy one set of maps for both. Garmin also offers off road maps, water way maps for an extra fee.

My Dad got my Mom a GPS system for Christmas last year. It is an Insignia (Best Buy's store brand). It's only selling point is that it was cheap. The touch screen interface is crappy, and it died last month (after a map update of all things). Fortunately, they got the extended warranty on it, so Best Buy replaced it with a spiffy new Garmin unit. The Garmin is a lot easier to use, and faster too.

So in a nutshell, stay away from the Insignia units. Go for a Garmin. :waytogo:

Depends what you want it for.

For road driving, finding addresses and businesses, I like Garmins (mine's a 260w - $150 at Costco). Make sure you get one that says the street names (i.e: "Turn right on Main St" instead of just "Turn Right").

For hunting, hiking, some offroad driving, boondocking, etc, I like the Garmin eTrex series handhelds.

For racing or hardcore offroad stuff, get a Lowrance Baja series.

For fishing and boating, get a Lowrance.

the garmin nuvi 500 has topos on it, and you cant go wrong with the 60csx with some good maps loaded on it. I use a Garmin Legend Hcx handheld and love it. I didnt get the 60csx, at the time the price was about 150 more and the nuvi 500 wasnt out.

I got the Sanyo one at radioshack, they were doing some special and i got it for $100. Its been awesome, better than my wife's garmin.

You might want to tell us if you want a street map or a trail GPS. I own a Garmin Nuvi 200W for a street GPS and have yet to buy an offraod trails GPS.
