My neighbor has got a 2004 Pontiac grand am ram air with a 3400sfi.

The other day it was reving 2500 and would not idle down,it was running ok today but she went and bought a mas air flow censer for it,so I changed it for her this morning. when she left my place it was idling around 800 when she got to my place it was at 1000.

I disconnected the bat while I changed the MAF because it had some of the lights on in the dash ABS,Service engine light.

The ABS light went out but not the Service Engine light,I try ed to clear it by turning the key to on and hitting the gas pedal 3 times to the floor.:dunno: Works to reset the oil life on my duramax so I thought why not try.
Didn`t work.

Is there a way to cancel that light at home or does it need to be cleared with a scanner?

Also is there a way to test the cooling fans to see if they are working.
A shop told her that one is not coming on and the other is not working as it should.(It has never got too hot BTW)

I don`t want to work on this car but if there is some easy things I can check for her that would be OK.

This car has been plagued with little problems like this and she wants to get rid of it.

What do you guys think? It`s got 82 thousand miles on it what do you guys think it worth? It`s in good shape, but dirty.

Any replys on this are welcome...Thanks!

i'm not Too sure.. but what about the IAC valve? (Idle Air Control Valve)

also about the code. I never had a problem making the Service engine light go out on my brothers 01 pontiac grand prix. by pulling the battery off for a minute then hooking it back up.. :dunno: but who knows.. the 3 years alot could have changed.

sorry if im not much help..

You'll either need a scanner or to fix whatever is making the light stay on. Most OBDII stuff is a constant monitor except evap controls, so there is something not right that is turning the light back on even after clearing the code by disconnecting the battery. I'd recommend scanning it so you don't end up chasing your tail and throwing a bunch of parts at it.

Could be: MAF (you already changed), IAC, TPS, CTS as the most probable. You don't want to put $150 worth of sensors on when it could be just one of them for $25...

TPS, had to do it on my 99 grand am with the 3400. Had to stand on the brake at lights it was idling so high. New TPS boom done!

Good stuff guys
The throttle position sensor makes the most sense to me...I don`t know why someone told her to get a new MAS but she had it so I put it on.

What frustrates me the most is that these people don`t look anything up on the computer and they are to cheep to take it to a proper shop.

If it was mine it would be fixed and done...ask a few questions from some great guys,do some research and Viola everyones happy.

Thanks so far guys! :thumb:

BTW throwing random parts at it has just cost her 300.00.:doah:

Ck5 and for me the diesel place has saved me a ton. :waytogo:

Some of the GM cars went OBDIII in 2004. I don't know if a 3400 GA was one of them. But it means you need a scan tool to reset the code OR the battery disconnect trick. If the light comes back on, it's throwing the code again. Call Autozone and see if they can read the code for you. But IAC and TPS seem the most likely. The fact it came down when you reset the computer makes a vacuum leak seem unlikely.

The ABS light is probably unrelated. They are usually due to bad wheel speed sensors (i.e. replacing wheel bearing required) or bad wiring somewhere on the way to the sensor.

I change the TPS for her on Sat waited a couple days to see what she thought...say it runs perfect now.

Thanks for the help everyone!
