So, I've had nothing but trouble over the years w/ grease guns. It seems to me that the spring that pushes the grease from the tube up into the pump head is weak. I can leave the gun in the sun for a bit and it may help, also knocking it on the concrete sometimes, but getting kinda tired of always ****in w/ them.

Bought 3-4 over the last few years some cheap some expensive. Tried several greases. Which is a whole nother thing - why the hell do some of the greases separate and leak all over the damn place.

Is there a gun out there that is universally a good gun, or am I doing something wrong?

Point me in the right direction please!!

I agree, every grease gun I’ve ever owned SUCKED. I’ve done extra stuff to lock the plunger rod all the way out but they still seem to lose prime and only work good when you initially load the cartridge.

I’ve been considering buying mini guns and throwing them away yearly.

I’ve had this one for a few years and it hasn’t pissed me off yet. What usually happens is the grease tube has an air pocket. I found if it does stop pumping, I loosen the head a turn or two and press the little bleeder on top a few times. Then good again.

I have the Proto grease gun with Lock N Lube tip. Effing awesome set up. I maintain my own personal fleet of vehicles and a tractor (FEL and BH - tons of grease fittings on that hoe) and love this gun.

I had the same issue. Went through several guns and walked into my work's toolroom ( I work at a powerplant so everything gets abused) and saw several of the Proto ones so I asked around and no complaints so I bought one. I recall it being about 40 bucks. The damn Lock N Lube tip was like 20 or more but it's really worth it.

I also switched over to Lucal HD grease recently and it doesnt not seperate after being left in my hot ass garage all summer like other greases would including some higher end stuff like Amsoil.

Anyways, that's my recommendation.

I will also recommend the Lucas X-tra HD grease. It’s awesome stuff.

Been doing some reading on some tractor/farm forums about grease guns (those guys are heavy users for their equipment - and rely on it) and seems to be a consensus on a couple of things that I'm seeing.

Many complaints about prime being lost on the bottom 1/3 or so of the tube. I think that may be the big tube spring getting weak, and several mentioned locking the draw handle up to the plunger and manually pushing this to help prime the pump head again. I may pull one of the springs out of one of the several guns I have laying out there collecting dust and add it to the current gun - double spring.

A few people mentioned the oils leaking out of the grease causing the grease to stiffen - this could be a problem that would manifest w/ a weak spring also. The grease I have right now doesn't seem to do that (SuperLube) but it's strange stuff anyhow.

Also found this while doing some reading. Thought it was somewhat interesting. https://www.machinerylubrication.com/Read/28761/storing-grease-to-avoid-bleed-separation

If that extra spring doesn't do the trick I'll look for another gun.

Found many reviews from farmer/equipment operators/ garage owners that said the lincoln brand lithium electric guns were the cats ass. http://www.lincolnindustrial.com/pr...cts/powerluber®greaseguns/20v-lithiumion.aspx

I may also look at @jtrux or @Fastereddie suggestions if I'm feeling cheap (usually am).

@jtrux - I've seen those lock n lube tips, look interesting - should help w/ the damn gun sticking on the zerk - have you had problems physically getting to that lever and fitting the lever into tighter places? Also, do they seem to do a better job putting the grease into the zerk vs around the outside of it?

I'm kinda liking the idea of locking the draw handle to the plunger, I wouldn't mind manually pushing if it keeps the gun usable after sitting for a few months.

It is tight in certain areas but clicks on and off really well and doesn't leak or any crap like that. Does a pretty good job of putting the goo where it needs to go...similar to me, hence why my wife is pregnant.

Thanks, I'm not sure if I should like that or if it's just TMI...:haha:

In either case congratz!

Have a friend who greases the crap out of his big rig and he really likes the dewalt cordless grease gun. He keeps it in his truck, for those times he feels the need to climb under and lube it up. As to grease I use JT6 Mystic red high temperature but everything down here starts out at 90° and goes up from there. I think that's a great grease for everything I have ever used it on.

Bought a Milwaukee cordless, works well. I grease after every ride. Grease is cheap. Put my 30+ dollar tube of RCV grease in a lincoln trigger? one handed gun. Do not want to switch tubes regular like.

So, I took apart my guns and found I couldn't add a spring to my 'best' gun of the bunch as it was a tapered spring. The plunger seal in it was ginormous.

I was however fairly low on grease, not out but there was maybe an inch to 1.5" left in the tube. So spring was at is full extension. I stretched it out w/ a new tube of grease. Hand packed the head and then had to pull the hose off to get a good bleed onto the head.

Seems to be working fine again now. Greased a whole bunch of crap that I'd been putting aside.

If it starts crapping up again I'm replacing it. Cant tell, but looks like the Lincoln industrial uses a very similar battery to my Bosch stuff. Gonna do more research on that - if it does I may go that way.

My current one is 10ish years old

Not my fav, but it'll do.

Another vote for battery powered. Makes it way easier under the truck when you can leave it on the ground and just hold the top to the zerk and push a button. One of the few tools I keep in the factory case. Plus it works with all my other 12v Milwaukee tools. So the batteries aren’t wasted
