"Gredda's" Build / WTF / Help Me! Thread

sorry, only half the thought came out....

im also replacing the front 10 bolt with a 10bolt with 8 lug setup. I really meant to ask if that should be the same as my current one.

wow...sometimes i amaze myself.

Ok , that makes a little more sense :D, to answer your question , yes, the tie rod should swap from one 10 bolt to the other. All 10 bolts and d44's basicly use the same tie rod and all the front axles use the same tie rod ends IIRC, at least when referring to ORD stuff.

well, got my xj shaft sent to me (the right one this time)

was an easy swap...heated it to separate it. splined end slid right on. dremelled out a groove on the column end for the bolt. installed!

cant take it out for a spin yet (no interior) but its coming. cant wait to see how much it helps.

Im STILL prepping for the bedliner spray. I can see how people give up on this, start half-assing it, and end up regretting it later. Its tedious work.

what do yall think...spray bedliner over the rail or not? first picture or second one? I like the over the rail idea, but worry about messing with the seal or something.

also, what are yall doing about the window access panel in the tailgate? how do i go about masking it off, spraying, etc. I dont want to end up sealing it shut. I thought about removing the panel, covering up the exposed area really well, and spraying the tailgate...then spraying the access panel separatly, and just using red pain. kinda give her back some of her red interior. i dig the gray on red...

I plan on spraying mine with bedliner, but don't intend to spray over the rails due to the sealing issue you mentioned. I haven't researched it any but I can't see how you could get a good seal on bedliner. IF you wanted to paint it, you could strain out the grit and spray the rails so it would match... I've heard of some guys doing that for a "finish coat" on the inside... Not sure how good that is but just an idea. Personally, I would just repaint the rails and bedline just the inside.

I also would not paint the bedrails, simply because, have you ever leaned or rested your bare arms on a bedrail with liner on it? It's like leaning on little rocks, and if it has been out in the sun, HOT little rocks.

With the tailgate, remove the panel and paint it seperately. Seal the hole while spraying the gate. Simple solution, an old pillow, rolled up sweathshirt, etc. and some cardboard. Put the pillow or whatever on the window (rolled down and in the gate) and slide the cardboard in the hole. The pillow will hold the cardboard against the opening. :waytogo:

nice, good idea on the tailgate opening! I think you guys are right about painting the rail...im sold.

what you think about the idea of bedlining around the tailgate access panel, and just painting the panel red? something like this below. (no real reason, just trying to keep some red in the interior...im afraid with everything going gray, it will just be dull. (bad photoshop job, but you get the idea)

a plus, is that it might be nicer to sit on....

I think that's a decent Idea... definitely different... And you are probably right about it being nicer to sit on... for the same reasons mentioned above about putting your arms on a bedlined rail...

I would look at it this way... paint whatever you think you would like to be painted instead of bedlined... and if you turn out not liking it, you can always throw the bedliner over it later... You can't quite do it that easily if you bedline it first then wish it was painted :waytogo:

I'd prob leave the whole tailgate red, for the simple reason of sitting on it and be able to slide off.

finally!!!

man, i prolly spent over an hour on this one single bolt! The bolt in the floor right next to the passenger side wheel well (holds the seat belt end into the floor)

I soaked it for 2 days with PB blaster...nothing
impact wrench...nothing
impact driver...nothing
vice grips from the bottom...nothing

finally just drilled it all the way out. a few drill bit casualties along the way.

next is the pea sized rust hole in the floor just behind the passenger seat mount....then on to the bedliner. this prep stage is taking way longer than i expected. but im being ocd about it and doing it right.

yes actually....i heated it with my map torch, and cooled it with pb blast several times. It was the most stubborn bolt so far. Now to find a replacement bolt...

what should i do about that rust hole in the previous post of mine? how much around it should be cut?

also, my belt squeaks. i ad belt dressing, it squeaks 30 minutes later. Just replace it? could a squeaky belt be slipping...causing the occasional idle stumble?

rad, so I should just cut like a 1ft x 1ft square? and just do the same to one of yours? what are the chances of having one that doesnt have rust in that spot?

Get a chipping hammer and start chipping away at that hole. When you get to material the chipping hammer won't remove, you've hit good steel again. From there, just cut out a perimeter that is easy/simple to cut out of new steel and weld in using a piece of cardstock as a pattern.

Don't even bother if you're not going to thoroughly get rid of all the rust or the problem will just continue moving around the tub.

im not afraid to do it right....I have a small welder and and small skills.

I just worry because in that picture my rust is on a contoured section. how easy will that be to make right again?
