Has anybody used the gray Herculiner? I know it is tougher to find and more $, but I'm thinkin' it would be a lot cooler with the top off in the summer. How does it look? Does it fade at all? In the posts I have read everybody says it is rougher than Durabak. Are we talkin cheese-grater-skin-graft rough or just rough.

New question: Does LineX fade?

I think most of the liners that aren't sprayed tend to be cheese grater skin graft roughness if they have a fair bit of tire bits in them. Herc doesn't appear to have too much of that so may be smoother. Herc, (and other brands) will fade unless there is a UV protectant built into the formula or you add something over it once done.

I have gray Linex tailgate to firewall and Durabak on the outside and it's a huge difference in roughness. Re: fading: I don't run top off, so don't know how it would hold up over the long haul. Durabak oxides a bit but a lot of it comes off with a scrub brush. Someone in another post mentioned putting tire shine on it to bring the shine back and provide some added UV protection.

There is a smooth Durabak that would solve the cheese grater problem. Probably other brands carry sirnilar products

yes. When I picked up my truck after it was originally sprayed the bedliner was as blask as could be. I have had it 6 years now. its not as dark. I wouldn't even call it fading though. More like aged from use, with dirt and fluids added for character. If I were to scrub it will soapy water it will brighten it up, but its a truck bed, its supposed to be dirty.

Skigirl - So the Durabak is rougher than the LineX?

Was that on CK5 or in a magazine where I read about people putting a coat of the smooth Durabak over the rough Durabak to get a "medium" roughness?

Wondering about the LineX fading because the PO had the top of my K5 LineX'ed - it will get UV all the time, but hopefully a little less dirt and fluids (well fluids anyway ;) ) on it than your average work truck bed.

Does anybody have experience with the black DIY bed liners getting real hot in the sun? It gets hot enough here without having a parking lot for my truck's floor.

Mine doesn't seem to get hot at all. I have durabak. I think the real question is is grey spelled with an "e" or an "a"? :D

The normal Durabak (not the smooth stuff) is noticeably rougher than Linex, due to the size and amount of rubber particles in the mix. Linex must be a bit of a different formula - it is much smoother and less rubbery. More like a tough plastic. The smooth Durabak (red) that I used to mix my custom color had some "drag" to it after it dried, again, like it was more rubber than plastic.

Like I mentioned, Linex has a UV coating sprayed over it for all colors except black, but I'm sure you could get UV over that too.

My top is black Durabak and the surface doesn't get nearly as hot as paint.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll end up going the black Herc route. It sounds like the gray stuff isn't worth the hassle and extra $ to find (and it might look kinda funny).

BTW, gray is spelled with an "a" and grey is spelled with an "e". One of them might not be a word though. Opps. Butt i's stil perty smart. I's wernt to colidge.
