I finally got my front drive shaft put back in my truck and decided to make sure everything was working as it should. I then heard a nasty metal on metal grind when I'd make a tight turn in 4 wheel. The grind sounded rotational, only happens in 4 wheel, and only on tight turns. You could also feel a bit of a ship when turning like the tires bouncing when you turn too tight. Asked the auto part store and they said u joint behind the tire and an auto repair shop said could be the hub are worn and the spline might be slipping. U joint would be cheaper to fix but hubs are easier. Any clue on how to determine which or what it is?

Climb under truck and look at the ujoint. Thats whats nice about open knuckles.

Take a large screw driver and pry on the ears of the shafts and see if anything moves around. Should only move in and out a little and everthing should move as a unit.

Also have a look at your transmission cross-member mount. If the rubber is shot, and your t-case has a flange and not a yoke, it can cause the t-case to drop enough that the flange hits the crossmember, making the rubbing noise in 4wd only, when flange is spinning.
