ok everyone. i got a 86 k5 m1009 6.2L th400 np208.. heres whats going on.. when in 4x4 if i put the truck in reverse not moving at all foot on the brake i get alot of grinding noise.. its only doing it in 4x4 no noise in 2wd.. just looking for some ideas of what this may be.all fluid levels are where they should be. if i take my foot off the brake the truck backs up just fine no problems no noise when i start moving.. any help be great. thanks Ryan.

And this only happens in reverse, or in forward gears as well?

Make sure the front hubs are locked solidly, one might be loose.

The older transfer case linkages are famous for going loose, don't know about the NP208. Does this occur in both 4H and 4L, or only one or the other?

If its not adjusted properly it may. Does your rig have any modifications? Body lift, tcase drop etc?
yes it has 4in lift all spring t-case has small drop... its had the lift for 10+ years. never had any problems till last time it was in 4x4.

Well, that it's only in reverse says to me that it's the transmission or its linkage. You could adjust the transmission shifter linkage under the truck by the framerail, or maybe jiggle the shifter a bit towards P or a bit towards N and see if the noise goes away.

OTOH, if it only happens in 4LO, then it sounds the transfer case or its shifter. Since 4LO is the last setting, the shift linkage may be out of adjustment. You can try holding the shift lever all the way back by hand, putting pressure on it. I had one truck (admittedly with the '203 case) where I had to hold the shifter into place with some force.

HTH.

well all linkages are tight and good. and agin its only when its not moving as soon as i take my foot off the brake it stops making noise moves rolls just fine. re checked all fluieds and all are where tehy should be.. im thinking its got to be something in the trans. so i may take it to a trans guy this week if i have time.

I'm thinking one of the hubs isn't engaging right, so when you're in 4WD the inner shaft is turning and the hub isn't -- would explain why it happens when you're stopped. Once you're moving the hubs rotates with the wheel so it doesn't grind.

Still needs to be fixed, of course...
