Just got the '1977 K5, took it for a spin...please remember this is my first time driving a 4x4 so I'm new to this.

Anyway, I had it in Hi or Neutral (I forget) and using the column stick shifted to park or drive and heard a horrible grinding noise that lasted for a few seconds (did this about 3 times before realizing I made a major goof) along with the stick (on the floor) vibrating. I found out later today that was a no-no and I should NEVER have done that. It's been a long day but from what I remember the 4x4 stick on the floor became stuck and so did the column stick between the park and drive position!

Could I have damaged the transfer case? Should I be worried? Anything I can do to check for damage?

Afterwards I took it down the block and back and it wasn't driving sluggish or anything like that but the truck does vibrate a bit which I guess is normal.

Help me with the K5 OCD lol :)

what he said^^^^

guilty as charged:whistle::doah:

don't do it again
just keep driving it and report the findings
it's an old truck that looks purdy, but I'm sure she's tired in more ways that one

save the funds too, don't buy anything unless it's to fix something important. Lots of trucks are sold cause the owner bought a ton of stuff only to end up needing an engine or trans a month down the road.

So what exactly was I hearing? The automatic transmission grinding or the 4x4 case grinding? The pattern was this...4x4 stick in Neutral and column in drive...nothing happened? so I dropped it to park and heard that horrible grinding (sounds like a chain or belt)....OK...let's try this a second time....4x4 stick in another position and I put her in drive...moving now so I put it in park and heard the same noise again and of course the 3rd time around the same thing happened.

As it turns out this is a full time 4x4, my father was thinking back to his '76 and said "put the 4x4 stick in neutral and put it in drive" as that's how he remembers his '76 (back in 76 :doah:) shifting...well he must have had a major brain fart lol :D

I just got off the phone with a friend and he said it would be like taking a moving truck/car and throwing it in park without stopping...not a good thing to do :(

Tags/Insurance first thing in the AM, so I'll be able to take it on the highway and back roads.

How can I check if everything is OK? after that little incident and I gave it a spin it shifted and operated fine (from what I can tell) from park to drive/reverse, etc.

All I've been told is to check for jerking/sluggish performance on the road tomorrow and if none of that is present I should be GTG (good to go).

Just a bit nervous that I could have f***ed the automatic transmistion or 4x4 case on this '77 with what happened but I guess time will tell?

We are planning on keeping this truck and keeping her up and running so if worse came to worse and it ever needs a new transmission and transfer case down the line I better sell the old mans guns to pay for it :haha:

Sorry for being a PITA with all the questions, better to ask versus having to open the damn check book I suppose.

Don't even worry about it it was the gears in the transfer case grinding against each other as they were trying to mesh

Thanks!

So that's what caused the needle to stick in-between the park and drive position on the dash along with that noise and the 4x4 stick shaking...Must have happened a good 4+ times in the driveway until he finally said "son, your doing it wrong *shaking his head*...let me in the ******* thing!" lol:waytogo:

My father was just saying the same thing a few minutes ago, how it sounded like the gears were grinding which really isn't a big deal. He was saying if you did it everyday for weeks/months/years on end that would obviously damage the transmission and T case (requiring a rebuild or swap) but a few times wouldn't have hurt anything. I also received the lecture on how in the Military the M1009's had seen far worse things...like people who had never even driven a car before! lol :eek1::eek1::eek1:

I still hear a little noise when shifting gears which he told me is normal and I should have the T case eventually checked (fluid, check for metal shavings etc.) in the near future for preventative maintenance, is this true?

Anyway, I just gotta wait for those damn tags!!! Luckily around here we have no traffic and going up the street and back is as far as I'm pushing it until my tags come in.
