I have a 14 BFF axle with 4.56 gears and a Grizzly Locker. Recently, there were ratcheting noises coming from the rear end that gradually get louder the longer I drive. I have had the Grizzly Locker installed for about 4 years and it just started making these noises. When I turn left, I can here it clicking. But when I turn right, there are no clicking noises. This lets me to believe that I have a weak spring on the driver side of the grizzly? I took it apart about 3 months ago expecting to find a broken spring but everything looked brand new. Anyone else have this problem with a Grizzly Locker?

Mine let's a clunkin/snapping noise from time to time. I've just learned to live with it.

Bowtie85, I'm used to the normal noises a locker makes but this is not normal. Almost sounds like one side of the locker is now continuously locked in after the rear end heats up after a few miles of driving. Makes an awful ratcheting noise as im driving in a straight line. Going to call Randy's Ring and Pinion for some tech support today and see what they suggest.

Yeah when my gov loc went it started making bad noises. Not sure if its the axles having some wear? But it's still the same In the grizzly, slightly quieter.

My front grizzly makes no noise at all surprisingly.

No return call from Randy's Ring and Pinion. Going to pull the cover and inspect it tomorrow. And yes, Bowtie85, it did not make any noise before this. I inspected it about three months ago and everything looked good. New spring is $6 plus S&H. When I pull it this time, I will inspect everything and take measurements I think. Just got the drive shaft vibration problem fixed, now I just need to make this noise go away.

Inspected the Grizzly locker. Looks brand new. Springs in good shape and look identiacl to each other. Now I am thinking it may be the pinion bearings going? Just rebuilt the rear end about 4 years ago. Haven't wheeled it that hard. Just inspected it while looking at the locker and it is a little tight with the preload (25 inch/lbs vice 8-11 for used bearings). No obvious defects. Again the bearings and races all look in good shape. My wife says to just put it all together and just drive it till something breaks. Then I would at least know what to fix then.:dunno:

The one thing I had noticed in mine, was the support bearing area of the pinion was quite beat up. That bearing must have failed at one point and just had a bearing slapped in? Not sure if thats where mine comes from, ive never really worried about it.

Just a random thought.

I wouldn't think a bad pinion bearing would affect the ratcheting of the locker. Just my .02 but I agree with the wifey.

do they require friction modifier? I know the powertrax I put in my blazer made a lot of noise at first. It took 2 bottles of GM friction modifier to quiet it down. Maybe your gear lube is getting a little old and could use a change or some extra lubricity.
