Anybody mod a stock battery tray or otherwise fit a group 79 or top-post equivalent battery in the same place the stock one went? Stock we got a 34 or a 78. The 79 are just a little wider, but almost 2" longer. I guess the top-post equivalent is the 27?

Sorry if this has been covered, but I can't search on numbers :dunno:

OK, I'll just follow along on my own here.

I have an AC Delco Professional group 79 battery here, pictured next to a Wal-mart 78. It is practically touching the rad support and the rad overflow tank in the stock battery tray. It doesn't really "fit" the tray, so that will need some massaging.

This doesn't look like the old AC Delcos. It has vents on top and no handle. Granted, the handle would make it too wide to fit here. This battery is rated at 1050CA and 880CCA, 140 RC.

So here is the stock battery tray (38/79)

Here is a modified version - 1.5" added towards the firewall, 0.5" added toward the rad support:

Here's the larger battery installed - pretty snug.

And it's just that easy.

I just flap-wheeled the edges before welding, then hit the whole thing with a wire brush and sprayed rattle-can undercoating on it.
