i ended up connecting the two batts with jumper cables, and hooking up the batt charger at the 2 amp setting for about 40 hours. 
I kinda forgot I was charging them again...
anyways, after unhooking it all today and letting the batteries sit for ~6 hours or so I tested each. The Optima reads 12.40 volts, which seems low to me. The Interstate reads 12.84 volts.
I'm thinking I may use the heater fan to draw each battery down to ~10 volts, see which one seems to last the longest. The interstate battery shows some good numbers, but may not have much if any reserve. The Optima might be better than the number suggest so far. Dunno, but I'm open to any other experiments anyone wants to suggest.
