I just got a 88 jimmy and im having some trouble with cold starting.. it will crank and after i give it a little gas it will come on. But i have to keep my foot on the gas for bit until it warms up.. after that it runs normal. Any ideas on where to start

Sounds like you need a carb adjustment and either an electric or manual choke installed. I will say what you are describing is pretty typical for most of us running carbureted engines in colder temps. You can make it better with carb adjustment and possibly checking the timing. Both have a huge impact on cold starting.

should have TBI, not a carb

Also double check all of your vacuum hoses, look for dry rot and disconnected hoses. Make sure yout engine temp sensor is plugged in.

I have to pull my hand throttle out every morning to get my truck to start and keep running. Way better than fuel injection.
