Anyone run gumbo mudders?
Mostly rocks, loose gravel, a little slop when it presents itself down here in the good 'ol dry heart of texas.

i'm about to pick up a set for my blazer and wondering if they're worth the $500 he has them posted for.

The worst thing about em is they are at least what gotta be 8 years min and probably more like 10 to 12 years old, they quit making them a long time ago.

So check for weather cracking and stuff.

What size?

Yea he said they arent bad. A little bit around the lugs. but i'm going to armor all the F**K out of them. And theyre 40 on 15's.
And i will most likely groove them or at least comp cut them since they have a solid zig zag pattern.

i run 44" gumbo mudders on my K5. mine are old too, MFG. date of 98' but still in decent shape. If you plan on sneaking up on someone with them forget about it They roar like a bi-plane coming down the road! after sitting for more than a day they flat spot bad too but Ehh, comes with a bias tire. also, I don't know if it is because i run without my sway bar but they will grab any disturbance in the road and pull you all over the place. as far as off road performance, mud is what I do. I hopped off in a hole that come up to past the rockers on 14" of lift. didnt completely think it through since I was without a front driveshaft and another truck (why two people go mudding in one vehicle I'll never know.), but they pulled me through it after finding bottom somewhere off the coast of China, and digging ruts big enough to bury a Fiat. rocks, dont have too many of those around here in dallas so the extent of my rock driving has been county roads. all in all i personally think they should have never quit making them. I think they are a great tire and you should be happy with them.

Yea the bias ply part will suck a little but i'll get used to it. Are they soft or hard tires?

You can also soak the tires in trans fluid. It will soften them up alot.

Being so old, my gumbos are pretty stiff through the center tread and out towards the lugs. The very ends of the lugs still have some flex to them though. I run around 20psi in them and seem to have a decent road ride for a old bias tire.

I was a little worried about that, hoping a couple bottles of armor all will get them back to new.

No worse than ArmorAll. You only want to soak the tread and sidewalls. It also depends on how bad they are dryrotted.

IMO, 500.00 for dry rotted tires is nuts. I would keep shopping for something better. I can tell you first hand what happens when you blow a 40 on the front of one of these rigs. It rolls over and over.

I talked him down to 325. If nothing else I'll run them on separate wheels for the trails. :dunno:

And he said they "arent bad" so I'll take a look see.

id run tubes in them if they are dry rotten..

we all know how it goes.. ok so dryrotten.. no biggie. ill just use them as trail tires... so when you are at the trail and need to zip down the road to wawa your gonna go... then 50-60mph.. POP.. swerve... BANG.. KABOOM...

or up on a muddy hill on an angle.. the angle of the fadangle of tread will make the crack separate and then sliding and rolling down you will go..

remember safety... #1..
while i love my ground hawgs (like those tires)..
they are bias ply.. rough and loud but i dont care...
i have a 5th in the bed... dry rotten to h3ll.. IF i need to use it and that is IF.. it is to limp out of there and somewhere safe... i wouldt run 4 dry rotten tires..

but all that is IMO.. im 39 and when i was younger I know what I would have told myself..

We still don't know how dry rotten they are. My two year old maxxis tires. Made in '10, are cracked to hell around all the lugs.

I have a set of the 40x17s in my back yard. The rubber is hard as hell and they didn't get any traction in snow (I'm talking about deep snow runs in the mountains, not winter road driving BTW). They didn't work well on rocks due to the hard rubber. I did have plans to cut them though. I believe if you cut up the lugs in to smaller pieces and then siped the hell out of everything, they'd work pretty decent. The sidewalls are still extremely stiff though.

I did get mine for free FWIW. For $325, I'd run a smaller, more modern tire if you're not wheeling mud or flat land in deep snow.
